I have a 1985 CJ7 4 cyl. with a 4 speed manual in it can I switch it to an auto fairly easy and inexpensive? Also what would be the best transmission to do this with.
Its usually never that easy when switching transmission types and mostly expensive so I wouldn't recomend doing the swap unless you have the time and $$$$$$$$$$$

Synchronizers are fairly inexpensive, but tearing the trans apart and changing them is not something for the untrained. If you have a shop go through the trans at least you will know what you have.
I believe so. The 4.3 has the same bell housing as 350/305. It is different from 2.8 and 2.5. But from what I remember the 2.8 and 2.5 were the same. I can only speak for years up to 93. I know on the later models the slave cylinder is inside bell housing and the speedometer would be different. Probably too much trouble even if bell housing was the same.
It may be just the vehicle speed sensor. Does the speedometer work OK? The vehicle speed sensor tells the computer how to control the shifting and it also sends a signal to the speedometer. Is the trany full of fluid, is it fairly clean? It should be red. Most vehicles, you check the fluid with the engine idling, in park.
yes if you make sure the front hubs are disengaged(turn little hub releases in middle of the wheel, man trans is ok auto not ok you do need to remove the drive shaft of an auto not man
I would pickup a plastic manual pump syphon hose, insert it in the transmission fill tube and pump out the appropriate amount. You should be able to buy on cheaply at most auto parts or home improvement stores.
sounds like a faulty output speed sensor in trans..on driver's side of trans, screws into front of transmission..fairly inexpensive part..let me know what you find
