The 1996 Jimmy has a timing chain. I can't tell you whether or not it is worth replacing or junking the vehicle over, that depends on if you are able to replace it yourself, if you can find somebody to do it for a good price, or if you have enough money and have been wanting a new car. If you haven't checked yet you may want to check the solenoid. They tend to get hot and cut the circuitry of the engine off. If it was me i would check and see if it would start cold and if it does try and replace the solenoid, and then if the problem happened again take it to a shop to have the timing checked.
Can't help you with the noise, but I suggest that you remove the belt and check all pulleys for any roughness or binding when turned by hand. You have a timing chain...You are right in the "window" where I've seen the most failures. It;s time to change it. It's not an "emergency" but when the chain stretches, it rides up on the cam gear and rips off the plastic gear teeth. And, it will always happen when you have the least amount of money or time to do the repair!
Sounds as if your ignition timing is off... Could be in need of adjustment, a vacuum advance line is off or broken to the distributor, or worse, your timing chain - belt has slipped a tooth...
