1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Logo

I have a 1997 Chevy K1500 Silverado 5.7L and suddenly the power steering quit. Their are no leaks, the pump pully is working and there has been no noise or any indication that the powersteering unit was failing. The fluid does not seem to be agitating inside the pump when the engine is running. I have 48000 mile on this vehicle. I checked the variable steering fuse and it was good. Any body have any suggestions?

I had the same thing happen. In the end it was the mechanism that attached from the pump to the lines there was a little metal piece with a spring that im guessing kept getting stuck

How can I tell if my 1997 chevy lumina's power steering pump is bad

yes if the aux belt is disconnected the pulley should turn free with slight resistance, sounds like a pump fault.

1999 Silverado K1500. No Power Steering

While the engine is running look in the reservoir and see if the fluid is flowing. If you can`t tell then remove the belt and pull out on the pulley. What will happen on some of these is the pump steering shaft will sheer off.It will still stay in place but it is not turning anything.Hope this helps.Good luck.

1999 Silverado Power Steering Stopped Working

When you go and buy the new pump it will come with instructions. the hardest part of the job is the pulley. "don't use a hammer on it or pry on it" It can only be removed with a special P/S puller tool. If you have a Autozone near by you can rent it for nothing. Follow the instructions, press it off, remove the pump, install the new pump, press the pully back on(the face of the pully should be flush with the shaft), fill, purge, and check for leaks.

Chevy silverado power steering

The power steering pump shaft may have broken inside the pump. I have seen this happen on a these trucks. Have your pump checked.

Power steering - 1999 chevy silverado

You're going to have to bleed the system alot on those trucks. Just remove the return line and have an assistant turn the steering wheel back and forth just enough to engage the pump and filling the resevour while doing this. Keep bleeding until you have a good flow of P/S fluid out with no air bubbles. This can take a while.
