Why do you have to have two programmed ignition keys in order to program a new chip key. ?

probably need to keys so that a key could be clone from a good key
if you lost a key and want a spare , there is no way around it except to buy a new fob key and have it programmed to the immobilizer system

I lost my key. i had no money so i tried 2 hotwire my own car.everything has been torn out by a friend as far as hotwiring it. but it will not turn over. what am i missing

You are missing the key and common sense. Most newer vehicles cannot be hotwired due to security systems. Having a friend try to start it without any knowledge of how the systems work will only increase the cost of getting it fixed. year/make/model??? This info is needed in order to offer any assistance.

1996 Probe, MT. How do new keys work with the old transponder chip?

When the anti theft system was created, the dealers forgot to tell the new car buyers about how much the fob matters to the vehicle, without it,owners are stuck, your anti theft device is activated, you need to lock and unlock your doors a couple times with the key fob,not the key,and then you need to put the key in the ignition and start it,if you dont have your key fob, call your car dealer to get a new one, they are programmed for each car only, you cannot bypass it.if you lost your fob or never had it,whatever, you need to have the exact fob that came with that car from the factory, the key and fob have a chip in them that only go to that certain car,if you do not have it,then you need to buy a new one from the dealer or ebay and then you need to contact your dealer about programming the fob to your car,you might not have to have it towed if they have the documents from the car,the only other way is to get a junk car, with the steering column, key, fob and all computer boxes and door locks and switch them,i just did that with a 98 dodge dakota, and it works.

What else can be the reason this 2000 Dodge Caravan won't turn over by turning the key while in park.

have you checked the ignition switch thats on the steering column shaft, when you turn the key it moves a rod that moves positions on the switch.

Cadillac seville won't start due to theft system

If you know how to solder, you can try building up the "chip" area on the key and reinserting it. That's the only thing that controls the PASSLOCK theft system.

Measure the resistance from one of the contacts to the other with an ohmmeter, and you can get those keys from eBay. Once you get the car home, order one for a couple bucks, and get it cut at your local hardware store.

When you order the new key, they will ask you for the resistance measurement across the resistor embedded in the key, and send you one that matches.

If you'd rather order one from the dealer, they are still available last I checked, but were significantly more expensive than the eBay option.

Lost Car Key

Usually you can go to the dealership and give them your VIN number (or whatever numbers they may ask for) and proof of ownership and they can order/cut you a new key in very little time... I lost my keys to my 1994 Acura integra on the ski slope once and couldn't get home and they were able to get me a replacement in a couple of hours....

Ignition key will not turn

Thanks to the person with the wd40 suggestion. stuff that little red tube right up there and liberally spray. I just had the panic when I went to drive to the store in my 98 town & country and the key didn't turn. I read lots of varying solutions and was ready to get the emergency locksmith out here to replace the barrel and then I stumbled across that suggestion here. It made so much sense...and it worked. The barrel will probably still need to be replaced at some point, but not urgent.
thanks again!
