Battery running down.

I removed the battery, cleaned the posts, then put it on charger. 2nd I removed the alternator, and had Advance to check it out on their test machine, It tested ok! 3rd reinstalled battery, and alternator, but noticed when I hooked up the neg post on the battery, I had a spark, or voltage drop. I checked the drop between the neg battery cable, and the battery the reading was 11-12 volts. I checked all fused circuits under the hood, as well as the board inside the cab. Nothing showed up, until I removed the charge wire and brush wire from the alternator. The question I'm asking? Can the alternator show ok, but still have a large enough voltage draw to drain the battery in short order?... Thanks in Advance Brandy

Could be a ground problem; I send you a drain test to check it, you will need a digital volt and ohm meter to perform a battery draw test.

WARNING: Do not attempt this test on a lead-acid battery that has recently been recharged. Explosive gases may cause personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the meter, do not crank the engine or operate accessories that draw more than 10A.

NOTE: No factory-equipped vehicle should have more than a 50 mA (0.050 amp) draw.

Check for current drains on the battery in excess of 50 milliamps (0.050 amp) with all the electrical accessories off and the vehicle at rest for at least 40 minutes . Current drains can be tested with the following procedure:

NOTE:
Many electronic modules draw 10 mA (0.010 amp) or more continuously.
Use an in-line ammeter between the negative battery post and its respective cable.

Typically, a drain of approximately one amp can be attributed to an engine compartment lamp, glove compartment lamp, or interior lamp staying on continually. Other component failures or wiring shorts may be located by selectively pulling fuses to pinpoint the location of the current drain. When the current drain is found, the meter reading will fall to an acceptable level. If the drain is still not located after checking all the fuses, it may be due to the generator.

To accurately test the drain on a battery, an in-line digital ammeter must be used. Use of a test lamp or voltmeter is not an accurate method due to the number of electronic modules.

When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module (PCM) relearns its fuel trim. The vehicle may need to be driven to relearn the strategy.

Make sure the junction box(es)/fuse panel(s) is accessible without turning on interior or underhood lights. Drive the vehicle at least 5 minutes and over 48 km/h (30 mph) to turn on and activate the vehicle systems.
Allow the vehicle to sit with the key OFF for at least 40 minutes to allow modules to time out/power down.

Connect a fused jumper wire between the negative battery cable and the negative battery post to prevent modules from resetting and to catch capacitive drains.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post without breaking the connection of the jumper wire.

NOTE: It is very important that continuity is not broken between the negative battery post and the negative battery cable when connecting the meter. If this happens, the entire procedure must be repeated. Connect the tester between the negative battery cable and the post. The meter must be capable of reading milliamps and should have a 10 amp capability.

NOTE:
If the meter settings need to be switched or the test leads need to be moved to another jack, the jumper wire must be reinstalled to avoid breaking continuity.
Amperage draw will vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on the equipment package. Compare to a similar vehicle for reference.
No factory-equipped vehicle should have more than a 50 mA (0.050 amp) draw.

Remove the jumper wire. If the draw is found to be excessive, remove fuses from the central junction box one at a time and note the current drop. Do not reinstall the fuses until you are finished testing. To properly isolate each of the circuits, all of the fuses may need to be removed and install one fuse, note the amperage draw, then remove the fuse and install the next fuse, etc.

If the current draw is still excessive, remove the fuses from the battery junction box (BJB) one at a time and note the current drop. Do not reinstall the fuses until you have finished testing. To properly isolate each of the circuits, all of the fuses may need to be removed. After removal of all of the fuses, install one fuse, note the amperage draw, then remove the fuse and install the next fuse until each circuit has been tested. When the current level drops to an acceptable level after removing a fuse, the circuit containing the excessive draw has been located.

Check the wiring schematic in the wiring diagram for any circuits that run from the battery without passing through the junction boxes. This could find in the Service Manual or Haynes books. If the current draw is still excessive, disconnect these circuits until the draw is found. Also disconnect the generator electrical connections if the draw can not be located. The generator may be internally shorted, causing the current drain.

Parasitic drains can be hard to locate, a test light is not the best tool to use, you really need a multimeter capable of reading current. There are a number of electronic boxes in the Envoy that will draw some small amount of power even when the truck is off, so be aware that there can be somewhere around 100 to 150 mA of current draw normally. Check some obvious things like the glovebox light or the courtesy lights in the visors.

Maybe the deep discharge on battery trashed it and now it will not take a charge. Sure the charger is working? Give it enough time to charge the battery - at least five hours.

You've got a good start measuring the voltage at the battery. Looks like you've got a low voltage problem. Common on the GM side post batteries is battery acid leaking at the positive battery cable post on the battery. I would recommend removing and checking the cables/posts on the battery. If everything is clean, reassemble the battery cables to the battery. If there is excessive wetness or corrosion on EITHER of the cables/posts, you should replace the battery first, and clean the cables. A leaking battery is going to give you more trouble down the road if you just clean it. If the battery connections on the existing battery are clean, charge the battery with a battery charger, or jump start the car. Use your trusty meter and measure voltage at the battery with the engine running. (Also do this if you replace the battery for leaks). You should read in the neighborhood of 13.5 - 14.0 volts if your charging system is working correctly. If you are reading in the low 12 volt range with the engine running, something is wrong with your charging system, and most likely putting a strain on the battery, preventing it from receiving the charge it needs. If your existing battery is not leaking, cables are clean and tight, jump starts okay, reads 13.5-14ish volts with the engine running, but refuses to crank the engine over after the engine runs for about 15-20 minutes, it's time for a new battery.

Was cranking but now it ignition clicks but will not turnover.

Dead battry. Charge batt. Try again. OR jump start with cables from 2nd car or tow truck. You may have service with your insurance for jump start at no cost. Once started you need to check the charging system to see if thats why it faild. Either alternator (charger) is faild or battery is failed. Generally its that simple, but somtimes not. Drive it to an auto parts store, they may put a meter on the car to check voltage while running. If voltage is 14 -15 + volts while running, then alternator is likely good and you need a new battery.

This sounds like a bad battery. Remove the battery and take to to your local auto parts store to have them check it.

I put a new battery and alternator but my battery keeps running dead and ive had the alternator tested and its good. what should i do

remove all the battery cables and clean them out. If you have an aftermarket cd player, I would check the wiring, especially the ground wire because that could drain the battery.

Battery dies causing the car to shut down

Check to make sure the battery is good bring it to a advance auto parts store they check the batteries for free. If battery checks out ok be sure to clean the battery trerminals and battery posts then reinstall and proceed to start the car after the car is running use a voltmeter to check the output at the large red wire where it bolts to the back of the alternator the reading should eb a minimum of 13.5 vols if lower than that the alternator must be replaced. The car shuts down when the battery dies because the ignition system must have a minimum of 12 volts to operate.

Battery will not charge

Take the battery to an auto parts store or Sears and have them run a battery test. It is very likely one or more cells in the battery have failed and it needs to be repalced.

99 Dodge Durango smokes from in the air filter under the hood and the battery dies when we try to start it. Fuel pump is heard coming on..

Remove the two connectors to the battery, clean battery posts and internal parts of the connectors. Apply anti-corrosion grease (from an auto parts supplier) to posts and connector internals. Wash your hands afterward to prevent mysterious holes appearing in your clothes. If the battery is discharged, put it on a charger (4 to 6 amps @ 12 volts--overnight). When battery is charged, try to start the engine. If ok, then measure with a voltmeter across the battery--should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts with engine running and 12.6 volts when not running. If the voltage remains at 12.6 volts with the engine running, then the alternator is not charging the battery. Get it checked at an auto parts supplier--most will do it for free in hopes that you will buy a needed replacement from them. Good luck!

Battery/alternator?????

This problem sounds like the battery because your alternator will keep the car running but the battery wil not start the car.
