1998 1.9 tdi loss of power

I have a 1998 1.9 tdi 90HP diesel sometimes it goes flat as though turbo isnt working? have changed air mass meter! no difference? it doesnt happen all the time. If and when this happens as soon as you turn the ignition off and on again the acceleration is there again?

Any ideas as to what this could be

Power loss and black smoke?

I had a similar issue to this after I got in a VERY small fender bender (literally) in an 87 Turbo Supra. In my case, my pasenger fender got pushed in JUST enough to crack a charge pipe and cause a boost leak.

Basically, what was happening was the turbo would spool and build boost, the mass fair flow sensor would read all this air coming in and tell the ECU to dial up the the appropriate amount of fuel. When the air reached the cracks in the charge pipe, it would escape out of them. Thus there was a much lower air-to-fuel ratio, causing less fuel to combust, which lead to power loss and black smoke out of the exhaust.

My guess is either an oxygen sensor, or more likely a boost leak.

Good luck mate.

19 tdi loss of power

I have a 1999 VW golf tdi with intermittent loss of power. The turbo will cut in for a few seconds, then die forcing you to change gear and get a small boost again. The turbo will not boost much past 2200 rpm. The cars computer has been plugged in at the garage and does not show any problems. Various people have said, replace turbo, air mass meter or just simply wash turbo filters in WD40. Can anyone help?

may be a build up of carbon, there are cleaners for your system to clear out carbon deposits and burn higher octane fuel and give it a good run.
