Starting problem. With the clutch fully engaged and the ignition key turned to the start position, the starter is reluctant to engage. This problem has been getting worse over the past year to the point where you must continually press clutch to floor and turn ignition key numerous times before the starter engages and car starts.

So the problem has been occuring for a year and you are just now trying to fix it? Sorry, I just simply do not understand why people do this...keep driving it until it won't drive anymore even though you KNOW it has a problem....Maybe you can explain this to me???

If you can hear the starter clicking when you try to start it, then you have a bad starter. If it makes no noise at all. then you most likely have a bad clutch switch.

SOURCE: 2002 nissan altima a/c compressor wont engage & wippers wont work

it could be a conscience that the wipers stopped too, because elctricly these are not sharing any resources.
there may be a leak in the system. when the freon gets low there is a pressure switch that disables the clutch to prevent damage.

"Warning Lights" on the dashboard of "1995 Nissan Maxima"

The warning lights coming on with the key in the on position is normal. If the key is turned to the start position and the engine will not crank over, suspect an internal starter motor problem or lack of power to the starter solenoid. You can try tapping on the starter motor with a blunt object while someone holds the key in the crank position to see if it starts when this problem occurs. If it starts using this procedure, the starter motor will be defective

How to reset the anti theft system in a 1995 maxima

I read somewhere I believe in Maxima Forums if you turn the ignition key to the ON position...not starting the car, and leave it on for ten minutes minimum without touching anything it will reset itself.
Worth a shot.

2. Starter motor pinion jammed in flywheel ring gear
3. Starter Solenoid faulty
4. Starter motor faulty
5. Ignition switch faulty
6. Defective Battery fusible link (140 amp)
7. Automatic transaxle not completely engaged in park or clutch pedal not completely depressed.
8. Broken or stripped timing chain
9. Ignition components damp or damaged.
10. Broken, loose or disconnected wires at hte ignition coils or faulty coils.
11. Defective MAF sensor.
12. Worn, faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs.

I suspect the starter solenoid, mounted on the starter was 'stuck' on the engaged position.operation in the condition you describe has caused it's failure.starter needs to be replaced.

1995 Nissan Maxima starter won't always engage when key is turned

It is most likely the solenoid contacts that are getting bad. You can sometimes have an auto electric shop fix your starter for a reasonable price.

Thanks,
