95 G. Cherokee, 5.2L hesitates or staggers at 60-70mph. Feels like an irregular, intermittant ignition dropout. No "Check Engine" message or diagnostic codes. Been to dealer garage three times. Replaced ignition parts & wires and put in injector cleaner. Each seemed to help for about 40 miles, then problem returned both times. Also, trans cooler line replaced shortly before probem appeared.

Get a can of brake clean and clean the inside of the Mass Airflow Sensor, there is a small heated wire that gets dirt on it and sends an incorrect signal to the engine computer (PCM) on how much air is entering the engine, this will cause a hesitation and other problems, this will not set a trouble code, that is why it is so often overlooked, if cleaning doesn't make a difference the MAF may be defective and in that case a rebuilt MAF can be had fairly cheap.
Before you replace all the parts on your car.... pick up a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze. next time you fill up your car add them.. if you can let it sit in the tank over night.
Take it out for a drive in the morning and see what it's like then.

Have you cleaned the throttle plate? Are you noticing any decreased fuel mileage? is this when you are at cruising speed with no real load o n engine?
Carb'ed Engines:
Code 54 - Mixture Control (MC) solenoid is shorted or the ECM is faulty.
Fuel Injected Engines:
Code
54 - Camshaft (or distributor sync.) reference circuit - No camshaft
position sensor signal detected during engine rotation.
Change your fuel filter.Good Luck.

Hey There henry,
Its a Transmission problem. I experience the same problem with my car a couple of months ago and i found out that my transmission was wearing of. I hope this answers your question. And of course let us know if you need any more assistance.
What about the o2 senser,,or you could have a weak fuel pump,, thats what can usally do that,

I assume the reference to the O2 sensor is that it might be out or faulty. Would that cause this problem, or prevent diagnosing the problem? As for the fuel pump, the problem goes away when I punch it to pass, then resumes when I go back to cruising. Seems to me it should stagger on passing if it is fuel starved.

I've probably driven about 8000 miles since the problem first appeared and doesn't seem to be getting worse. Wouldn't a failing tranny get steadily worse?
If it is fuel starvation, wouldn't it hesitate when I punch it to the floor to pass?
Thanks Mohammed387. The dealer garage got no diagnostic codes when they queried the system. Can you have the cam angle sensor malfunctioning and not get a DTC?
Thanks Tripleauto! In looking at the service records, I see no mention of cleaning the throttle plate. If there has been a decrease in milage, I haven't noticed it and I check it fairly often. The problem does indeed occur only when cruising above 60mph. It disappears when passing or shifting down going uphill.
