1997 Taurus with a cold start idle miss fire. There are no codes to be found. So far I changed the plugs they were bad. Then I cleaned the throttle body with the crc throttle body cleaner.(safe for fords teflon coating) Cleaned the egr valve. Changed the cam sensor. Changed the Ect sensor. Replaced the pcv. It got a little better. Basically you fire up it run like **** for 2 min chugging and miss fireing then all goes away. Runs fine all day or atleast till you let it sit 6 hours. Scratching my head on this one. Looking at next IAC valve cleaning, new fuel filter, and a coil ohm test just to rule them out might also do a inline spark check. Car has 100k just on it. i also had the head gasket replaced at 52k. It just over heated due to weak raditor cap. All flushed and good. this problem showed its ugly head two days after the flush and fill.

Drop in to autozone, or Pep boys and have it scanned, free, for trouble codes then go from there. Could be something simple & cheap

dont take soo much in consideration after you have make all this things, some time is on only for any wire faulty, or a shrt electrical arc in any place in wire system. ask auto tap mechsnics for this maybe they have similar case before.

Might want to change o2 sensor's, If they are not sending the right single its tell the computer to dump fuel. 1988 was using a fuel density system.
(1989 came out with Mass air flow system)
Check this
I think it might have a TFI module that's not working right. Located under distributor. Its gray and about 4" long and if equip, you need a 4 or 5.5 mm tool to unbolt it. This was a common thing back in the 80's. Its been so long I can't remember if the 4.9 straight 6 had it or not.
T- Thick
F- Film
I- Ignition module

After all you have been through, check your body grounds.look at the three or four small black wires near the radiator and at the battery Make sure they are good, and also you can make a new ground from the battery to any where on your body. see if this helps.
Some times when work has been done on fords a body ground goes overlooked. And is not put back on the car.

There is a large vac line coming straight down from the throttle body that goes to the PCV system. See if it has a hole in it. It is likely sucking air.
