Upon starting my mercury monterey van when it's cold out it won't shift out of park & the check traction control light comes on. Once the van warms up it will then shift & upon shutting off the car & restarting it the light goes out. What could be the cause of this problem?

The red brake light is the key here. That usually indicateds a hydraulic problem. Check you fluid level in master cylinder and see if it is low. Also the level indicator sensor there in the master cylinder maybe sticking or corrioded. If ABS sees the red brake light it will shut off and turn on the ABS light,also traction control would be disabled as well.

I had the same problem with my van in october. Turns out that water was dripping on the conection where the wiring harness connects to the ECM (passenger side fire wall in the engine compartment). I pulled the ECM dryed the conectors and made a cover to protect the connection. Has worked fine ever since. I think there is a TSB on the issue.
SOURCE: The car had been running rough...bought spark
His is probably not want you want for and answer, but;
These are two of several signs of a blown head gasket; it runs rough because when the engine cools after running, it is sucking coolant in to the combustion chambers and wetting the plugs.
Once started, the white fog is the heated coolant passing through the engine and out of the tailpipe.
Depending on how bad the failure is, you may also find oily stuff in your coolant overflow bottle and a creamy appearance on the oil dipstick.
Sorry, this is not an easy fix; the head gasket needs replacing and the cylinder head and block should be checked for warpage before the engine is reassembled.
When the gasket fails, the head will need resurfacing, the block may be still OK.

There are 2 support shocks that support the lift gate. You need to replace them. One or both of them are no longer supporting the door. Your local auto parts store will have them in stock. Compare prices with competitive stores, prices vary depending on where you purchase them from. It't really easy to replace them.
SOURCE: Keyless Entry keypad code for Mercury Monterey?
You can try Car fax.com, they might have that information. If that does not work, then it's going to be a drive to the dealer with your ownership so they can reprogram the Mercury a new code for you. Sorry, but it's a liability thing. Good luck
