2001 Chevy S10. Was running fine, driving about 55 mph, temperature guage didn't show that it was hot. lost power, coasted to a stop, then had white smoke coming from exhaust and from under hood. Recently my heater started blowing only cold air but no other indications of any problems. what could be causing this?

the problem was low transmission fluid. added half a quart and the problem went away.

Is your check engine light on? It may be your catalytic converter is clogged, if it seems to idle ok, but no power, and also your rpm's would sound different while reving it up past 3,000. Also have someone stand behind you at the tailpipe while reving it, and see if the flow seems restricted. Does it smell like rotten eggs, or a weird sulpher smell? If you live by an auto zone or advance auto they offer a free OBD 2 scann to read your check engine light.

could have a loose wire did you check your alternators output voltage? if it's 13 to 14 drive it, as these have internally mounted voltage regulators
