I have a 2004 Aviator that the gear shifter will get stuck and not come out of park to shift to other gears. I have followed the trouble shooting in the owners manual but still have problems. Had a problem with not being able to move shifter. Took the vehicle to Lincoln dealership to have checked out. Just knew it was going to cost me big money well it cost me $1.45. The problem was fuse number 16 if this fuse is bad the vehicle will not shift. I hope this info will help.
If you remove the silver clip on the top of your sifter right by the button you depress to move the sifter you might see that the plastic clip is braking/broke so you might need to replace the shifter. It is very easy to replace remove cover, if correct 4 bolts holding it in-place then unscrew bolts holding shifter. Order part online much much cheaper than dealer.

Its the shift lock solenoid......... if not check to see if you have brake lights...... the brake switch controls the shift soleniod
THE PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IT ALSO UNLOCKS THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY
Although the individual with problems engaging the detent button on the shifter while parked on a hill may have a different problem, the most likely cause that you cannot depress the button that allows the shifter to move out of park is that the wiring harness connection located just above the brake pedal that signals that the brake is engaged is loose or not completing the circuit for that signal. If the shifter does not "see" that the brake is applied, it will not allow the button to be depressed. A loose or intermittant connection in this harness has another very bad side effect ... you will not get brake lights if the connection is not made while depressing the brake when you are driving. I have an '03 Aviator with this problem. I taped of the electrical harness last year and the issue went away until recently. I will look to resecure, or perhaps replace the harness.

Change your brake switch that was what was wrong with mine. It's where your brake pedal is and it activates your shifter when you step on it

same problem, here! there are times with the slightest incline, it gets stuck in park and needs to be pushed foward to get free. there are other times that by lifting the release (in the underside panel) as the manual states it gets released. it's a real headache. there sure be a recall.
same problem hera s well, My shifter will stick on any sort of incline or whenever it feels like it. It did it the other day in my kidsvschool pick up line :(

Have the same problem, but in the 2003 Aviator. Dealer quoted $800 to replace the gear shift assembly ($600 part, $200 labor). I'm a little skeptical so I'm taking it for a 2nd opinion. Seems worse on incline (my driveway) also, when the gear is finiky its also difficult to get the key out of the ignition.

When I put my 2005 Avaitor in park on the slightest of hills, The gearshift gets stuck in park. I have to really force it out, thinking that it will break with that much force. I took it to a ford dealer where I purchased it and was told that it was putting presure against the "auw" and that when I put it in park on release the break it can put too much preasure against the Auw. He said that I should first put the parking break on before releasing the break and that should stop the problem.
It does but there should be a fix for this problem before someone gets stuck in the middle of nowhere.
I have the same problem with my 2003 Lincoln Aviator. Good looking car, but big problem with this cursed gear shifter. I experienced it many times, I thought it bill disappear; it didn't. For the final occasion I put more pressure on the metal and it broke. I have not fixed the damn truck! I don't understand how Ford built a critical part like that without properly testing it. Imagine that someone is after you and you need to quickly get into your car and drive away; when you get into the car the gear shifter is stuck and you can't move. It happened to me!!!
I don't know what Ford is waiting for to recall the Aviators with that problem and fix the gear shifter.

Just change your brake pedal switch, that's all I had to do to fix mine. There was something about that switch that activates the shifter if it's bad
