2004 reg Renault Clio Sport 2004 - Everything working fine until I stopped engine for about half hour on return found no demist or air con working. all front panel lights/systems operational and illuminated on the air con panel e.g. temp, fan intesity just no actual fan/demist/air movement. Checked all fuses marked with a fan symbol in passenger side fuse box - all ok and so are all underbonnet fuses. Guess its a fuse/relay/supply problem to the fan but can't find fault. I also have a 53 clio with climate control and the fan stopped working. After being quoted £104 by dealership I decided to have a go myself. Bonnet up, remove driverside scuttle cover. Unplug fan resistor 7701051272 (large plug with black wire to fan)remove securing screws and resistor. Dismantled casing and peeled away gel from soldered side of circuit board around mosfet transistor-desolder and remove. Mine was a N342AD 75344G but the nearest I could get was HUF75337P3 from Maplin £1.68. This was the wrong 'package size' but I managed.Close the clamp slightly (before)to hold transistor firmly and then insert transistor and solder. Reassemble. After I got an email from a scrappy QUOTING £20 if you don't fancy the messing about.

My son had the same problem with this so called resisor pack to control motor speed.
The sticky gue inside is silicon to keep out dampness and the device that blows is a N Type Mosfet.
I was unable to get the device number from his as it had a hole burnt out of it
I did a little searching and ended up replacing it with a IRFPS37N50APBF from RS components this is a 500v 36 Amp N channel Mosfet device and it seems to be working fine.
These devices are highly static sensitive so care has to be taken.
This is not a job for amatuers but at £10 including vat its a cheap fix Vidor
Hi alicantecoli, thanks for replying, but today I had some time and attacked the problem again. I pulled the air blower (not too difficult - remove cover panel over the wiper area lh side looking from front, diswconnect wiring connectors and four screws). Two more screws allow separation of the motor from it's housing.
I found the problem was worn down carbon brushes. A visit to a local washing machine repairers got me a new pair of suitable brushes - cost £3.50, much better than Renault's price for a new blower assembly at £231.70. Spare brushes are not available frrom Renault.
As for the noise from the binnacle, inside there is a small motor which draws cabin air over a sensor located in its throat. Renault say 'they all do that mate' and expect to change the motor every 40,000 miles or two years! Hmmm most of the noise is due to resonance of the plastics where the motor is fitted. Some hot melt glue has fixed the problem. TBH the whole method of mounting is rubbish - it's certain to have this noise problem.

Just for the record, I am, by profession an electronics engineer, and yes I had also looked at that fan speed module.
I can tell you the reason its so complex is because we have climate control and not just ordinary a/c.
The fan speed actually has many levels, and its all controlled by, I think, a small microprocessor feeding what is probably a high current FET. The motor is fed from a 'chopper' circuit - I know this because I took my trusty oscilloscope to the problem.
That sensor behind the interior lamp binnacle is also fed to the main control unit, which also powers the various air flow direction and hot/cold motors.
If you find from Renault that it is indeed faulty, I may be able to help (depends obviously on the replacement cost from Renault as to whether or not this would be worthwhile).

Hi, we had the same problem about a year ago with the climate control on our 2002 172, unfortunately our local garage couldn't find the fault as the fan motor worked ok but none of the controls did, our renault dealer found that the heater resistor pack had failed, £86 +vat for the part and £80 +vat to fit it. Can't tell you where the part is but it may have some serviceable parts on it when you do find it, part no; R7701051272. Mike
Thanks guys for assisting. I've found the variable device that regulates the fan motor - having eliminated a faulty fan blower motor. The sequence is from the LHS the fan sucks in cold air passes through air filter and next this device sits in the air passage with a large aluminium heat sink on it which is cooled by the air passing over it. at first it looks like a 5/6 way connector bolted to the air passage but it's actually inserted into the airway. I expected this to be a resistive winding - each winding giving a different voltage and therefore different fan speed - however its a semiconductor device bolted to the heatsink sitting in a white jelly substance and surrounded by a plastic housing. It must be a power transistor or triac to alter the voltage to the fan. I've just dropped it into Renault (cheekily) to say can they check if it's faulty as there is no indication from the pins what the connections are. They will let me know or give me a wiring diagram/fault diagnostic - so fingers crossed and I'll let youi know!

i do like the comment of changing the brushes,i do this on altenators where i buy brushes from the bosch agent for about 4€ .Well this problem seems to have been resolved but what a cost.Well i have come to expect this of renault but all the new cars are getting to be the same ranging from encrypted software ,to multi layered circuit boards which inhibit the chance of repairing.The dealers dont want you doing it yourself ,and the manufacturers dont want you to either as the way its going with internet connection from dealers to manufacturers ,then using bar codes on the spares packets before the immobiliser system is released so only genuine parts are fitted ,at dealer prices ?? then i can see a big rise in collectable classics that had no fancy electronics.Anyway best of brtitish from spain to all who contributed here

I have a 2003 Clio 172 with exactly the same problem. I am going to investigate this later today and if I find anything I will post again. One thing I have noticed is that there is a humming type noise which is there whenever the ignition is on (engine started or not) and it seems to be located behind the front interior light binnacle. Looking at the manual it seems there is a fan and inside temp sensor there. I will pull the assy and have a look.
I have 53 plate clio with climate control. Heater fan not working at any speeds at all. Checked fuses, checked motor, all ok. Would be greatful for any info on this matter.
It turned out to be the power control module - given these problems its likely to be either this power control module or the climate control computer. Some models have the resistor pack - this is in the fan housing but the power control module is in the air flow pipework between fan and cabin, after the filter. Its worth checking its faulty before buying as it cost £94 quid! All working fine now its replaced. Here's the fault find sequence:
check all fuses
ignition on is there 12v on track 4 of the power control module and on track 1of the blower motor?
yes go to *
no then check for 12v before ignition on track 30, an earth on track 85 and 12v after ignition on track 86 of cold air blower relay (yellow relay on an individual holder in engine compartment fuse box) - repair as necessary
check insulation, continuity and absencce of interference resistance on cold air delivery relay track 87 to track 4 of the power control module and and track 1 of the blower motor
if still no 12v supply on track 4 of the power module and track 1 of the blower motor - replace cold air delivery relay

check for earth on pin5 of power module (the pins are numbered 1-5) - repair if necessary
check insulation, continuity and absence of interfernce resistance of connection between track1 and track 2 of the blower motor - repair if necessary
disconnect the connector from the power control module and with ignition on shunt (short together) tracks1 and 5 - the fan should run at full speed - if not the fan is faulty
check the voltage between earth and track2 of the unit (with power module connected - this is tricky as there is a lot of insulation) it should vary as follows
speed 0 13.94v
speed 1 11.36v
speed 2 10.17v
speed 3 8.93v
speed 4 7.69v
speed 5 6.34v
speed 6 5.13v
speed 7 3.8v
speed 8 0.14v
if it does vary correctly (approx voltages) replace the power module - if not its the climate control computer
"As for the noise from the binnacle, inside there..." - what kind of hot glue melt would you use?? and where do you put it? i find it seems to get louder as the clips on the unit touch the base on the roof so would you just stick it everywhere?
do you think getting a new motor will stop the noise? renault want £20ish but if its still gonna be noisy theres not much point?
