Check the website for Autozone to get wiring diagrams free. If starter spins but doesn't engage, it is a bad starter drive located on the shaft of your starter. The solenoid is only there to spin the starter on a Ford. The centrifugal force engages the starter gear.

SOURCE: 4 wd will not engage ,indicator lights on dash do not light

If its not engaging into 4 WD the vaccum actulator is more than likely stuck. The actulator is located on the front of the axle next to the the front gear hub it will have a plastic cover over it. Unbolt the two 10mm bolts that hold the cover on and spray down with WD-40, also pull back the rubber cover thats on the actulator staff and spray it. You might have to hit the staff a few times to get it to move just make sure its in 4WD. I had the same problem, that part is exposed to alot of water, snow, salt and so on. Or you could just replace it but its cheaper to spray it down with WD-40

SOURCE: 95 F150 wont crank

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

SOURCE: 01 f150 4x4 4whell drive will not engage lights on dash come on

I am going to assume that you have auto 4x4, and not manual shift base model.. it just sounds like the servo motor that shifts between 2x4 and 4x4, has gone bad

question:
does it still engage into low range, even though it is stuck in 2x4?

2003 ford focus zx3 2.3l auto.. starter needed replaced due to test of solenoid wasnt working bench tested.. installed new starter..wired it up same.. now turn key amd i can hear starter motpr spin bit...

Yes, it is possible for the starter to spin without the solenoid engaging. The solenoid pushes the spring loaded gear forward to engage the flywheel.
You need to crawl back under your vehicle and ensure you've properly attached all wires. It should look similar to this:
starter-d053pipvg1eiz5wan5nws05s-1-0.jpg If these wires are properly attached, then check for power and/or damage to wires. The secondary will only energize when the ignition switch is engaged, so you'll need help (test when not attached to starter).

Where is the starter solenoid on a 2004 f150 4X4?

starter solenoids are part of the starter motor and engage the pinion into the ring gear before the starter spins.

My key turns in ignition but doesn't seem to engage, no lights come on either

Sounds to me like you have a broken linkage from your ignition tumbler to your ignition switch. It is a plastic "arm" that pushs.pulls a metal tab on your ignition switch.

Truck has electrical power but won't turn over. I think I can hear the starter solenoid engaging. Not sure. where do I start trouble shooting?

Safety first!--Make sure you're in park & brake on-- Try shorting across the starter terminals with a screwdriver,if the bendix kicks in & nothing spins, remove the starter & put in bench vice ,(or hold down securely), & jump with cables.--REMEMBER POLARITY--If the starter spins you are in deep *******---something in the motor is probably locked up.(If the starter doesn't spin get a new one.)

The starter stays engaged after motor cranks

First replace the starter solenoid on the firewall,it is where the positive battery cable goes too,it is most likely the problem,be sure the battery is not low,and the alternator is charging correctly, low voltage can cause this, but most likely the solenoid.

Ford f150 starting problem

A low battery or loose cable connection could be your problem. If the starter is not getting enough amps to crank the solenoid will click in and out.
