Uneven tire wear and struts problem

I went to the mechanic because my tires were bald on the outside of the drivers side front tire and bald on the insde on the passengers side front tire. I was told a while ago that i may have a bent lower control arm but the tire wear has been normal until I had a minor accident where i sideswiped a car on the drivers side and this uneven wear started. The mechanics are telling me all the struts need replacing and the lower control arm looks fine. I was wondering can this just be an alignment issue or do the struts really need to be replaced to solve this isse?

Sounds like you should have the alignment checked on an alignment machine on all 4 wheels.Once you get those readings and an expert alignment mechanic's estimate on repair, only then will you know the correct repairs needed.

Uneven tire wear is almost always caused by worn suspension parts and/or improper alignment. Take it to a reputable shop for an alignment check. They will tell you if it needs aligned, and give you an estimate on any additional suspension parts needed.

SOURCE: 08 honda pilot-cupping tire wear on rear drivers

what you need is an alignment. to have an alignment done, no parts need to be replaced. the car is put on a machine which measures 3 things on the wheels. then after the measurments are in, the suspension is adjusted, which makes your tire wear even. but like i said, no place needs to be replaced for an alignment. unless the part is visually damaged or making unusual noises it shouldnt need to be replaced. also, regular mechanics usually dont have the equipment to measure if your alignment is off or not. which means you have to take it to an alignment specialist, and they should give you a price of how much it should cost. usually is around 100 dollars for one pair of wheels(front or back) and should be under 200 for both front and back. hope this helps, goodluck.

tip

Does your car shake, shimmer, and/or vibrate? Read this...

Is your front end wobbly? Does your steering wheel shake?

There are a few reasons that your car will shake.

Your car will either shake up and down as if your riding on a washboard:

1a. This is caused by a bubble in your tire, or balding tires; as well as having tires that have not been properly (regularly) rotated and/or balanced.

1b. This is also due to a mis-alignment of either front and/or back tires. Not all vehicles can have a rear alignment, so check with your mechanic to find out.

2a. If your car is shaking from side to side; and/or your steering wheel shakes even a little bit while at higher speeds (45 and above); this is caused by the wheel bearings. Wheel bearings over time get dusty, from brake dust, water damage etc. Over time they wear out and become thinner, loose, and the grease seals wear out.

2b. The thing about this is that you can easily check this yourself before consulting your mechanic or other automotive dealers and such:

2c. With one tire securlely raised about 2 inches of the ground (or less as long as it's not touching the ground; grab the tire with both hand at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock; push and pull from either side as if your trying to wiggle the tire off; if there is a lot of play and you can easily move the tire back and forth in this direction, your wheel bearing is bad on that side. (front of vehicle) Do this for the other front tire as well; NOTE: regardless of how one or the other tire is, it is best (recommended) to replace both wheel bearings, for if you replace one, and leave the other, the one not replaced will soon go bad, and you'll be back to square one agian - save yourself the time and money and have them both done - (most mechanics will not do only one anyway and will recommend this as well).

3. When you have these wheel bearing replaced, ask them to check (and perform if needed and affordable) a front end alignment (some do this as well as part of the service and service charge) as well as alert you of the condition of your struts.

4. If your struts are bad, you'll know. The front end will "rattle" on either side, or both depending on if one side or both sides are bad. It won't necessarily do it all the time, however every time you hit a bump, even the smallest of bumps, you'll hear it, and possibly even feel it in the floorbard and foot peddles.

This is not something to be to worried about as far as being able to drive the vehicle, however NOTE that this will affect other components on the front end such as the alignment. Also, if this is not something you can afford to fix at this time, rest assured you can still have an alignment performed, however they may not be able to perform a "full" alignment until the struts are replaced.

Consult your mechanic for more and fuller details regarding your particular vehicle, and discuss the best options that suit your financial and car needs.

My struts need replaced, however I was able to have a 3/4 alignment performed, and my mechanic informed me that the struts will be fine until I can afford to replace. Inside of front tyre going bald

Just one tire or both? Likely you need an alignment done, but other things can cause tire balding and cupping. Brakes pulling to one side or other can also cause tires to wear prematurely and unevenly. Worn Shocks/Struts are also culprits. Worn or broken bushings in the suspension. Also, bearings starting to seize up can cause this as well. In other words, a BUNCH of things can cause the problem. If you have no issues with steering, handling, braking, it is likley just a simple alignment is needed. Take it in to a reputable place and they can diagnose the exact cause and suggest repair needed. Good luck.

The front tires wear rather quikly . possible something wrong with sepension

  • If you wear either the inside or outside of the tire which could mean your camber setting is off and alignment is needed.
  • If you have uneven tire wear in one direction (place hand over tire thread and run it forward direction, feeling for serrated sensation similar to a saw tooth) would relate to a worn shock absorber.
  • Consistent wear on the middle part of the tire means you are over inflating your tire. Adjust pressure with a cold tire and use a quality gauge.
  • Consistent wear at the inside and outside part of your thread means you are under inflating your tire.
  • Uneven cupping around the tire means a suspension component is worn. Check all rubber bushings for condition and ball joints for play.

My front tires are cupped almost bald on the inside and outside. almost all tread left in the center

under inflation is the first thing that come to my mind and lack of rotation and possibly shocks or struts that are shot. If your tires are worn down only in the center its usually overinflation.

Tire wear in middle of both rear tires

problem is with over inflating the tires, causing middle tread wear,as long as you have more the 3/32 tread wear in the middle than you are ok.always set tire pressure when cold at around 33psi,check tire inflation sticker on dar jam for exact tire pressure

I have a 2002 monte carlo and it shakes reallt bad at 50 mph and turning curves at 25 mph speeds and up...also going down hills and pushing the brakes..i just had new rotors and brakes put on the front...

I'm going to bet that you didn't do anything about checking the following:
  1. Tie Rods and ball joints.
  2. Shocks/struts...front and rear
  3. Wheel balance
  4. Condition of the tires.
If you don't know how to check the first two, do the following: jack front wheel up and insert a stand. Then take the bottom of the tire and pull up quickly and hard...does it 'click'? Now, do the same from front to back. Up and down wear is ball joints...side to side is tie rods. Get a mechanic to help you. Many chains will inspect for a modest fee.

If a tire is worn because of worn front end parts...the wheel can't hold a proper position in relation to the steering wheel...it wears the tires. They go out of balance and will shake at 25 mph. Check for rounded sidewalls and uneven wear. Replace the tires after getting new front end parts installed and aligned. Check your shocks/struts for excess wear or leaking. They contribute poor ride, to wear and sloppy handling
