Check under the dash at the top of the Brake pedal lever. There may be a switch there if they imitated the Ford system while Ford owned them. Your brake lights may not be working either. Sometimes this switch gets hit by feet and broken or misaligned. The brake lights will verify the condition. Loss of this switch can jam the Interlock.
There is also another device on the shift cable assembly. Together with the brake switch, they make it that you have to either have your foot on the Brake before starting the car; or before putting it in gear after starting.
Now you might have to readjust the cable or rod inside the steering column to get everything to line up and work properly. Or you may need to adjust the shift cable to center the locking mechanism for the Ignition.
The last possibility is that the tumbler pins inside the Ignition housing have jammed the switch. In that case, you need a new Ignition switch. This usually requires removal of the plastic cover on the steering column and a security bit for the bolts.
Volvo is no different than other Manufacturers in using something like this. The added switches were installed with the purpose of keeping cars from running away on start-ups. It is hidden and seamless when it works, but hard to diagnose and fix by owners.

Depending on the type of car aux is reverse from off and foreward one turn on others . If its the first- its possible the tumblers are stuck or internal parts failure in the cylinder - it will have to be drilled out and replaced ! If the second - theres a possibility That the shift lock mechanism is not working or gettin signal from the brake switch ! This keeps you from putting or pulling the car out of park or back into park from drive ! The shifter could be worn and the shift lock solonoide is not disengaged this also would keep the cylinder from turning back to off ! Beware that if you do happen to get the cylinder to turn to off and this is your problem then you will not be able to turn the key - bope this helps ! It all depends on the model and year of the car !
you need the key to change it ,AUX position then look on new lock and observe the position of the locking pin on the end of the barrel then drill a hole in that position on the steering lock to locate the pin, then with lock in AUX position and pin pushed down it will come out

Hello! I am intrigued, I used to have a similar vehicle and there was a button on the steering column that when press with ignition key in the aux position and a little pressure to take key out allowed it to turn all the way. It is a little difficult as you have to twist it back whilst pressing the button! But it should work. Hope this FixYa's problem? Good Luck! Paul 'W' U.K.
