First, you need to make sure you are using the right fluid. Your system call for Dexron II or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. Other fluids may "cavitate" or "foam" in your system and cause the whining noise you are describing.

Then, when bleeding the system, you need to let the foam settle for half an hour or more between "bleedings".

Start the engine, turn the steering wheel full lock left and right about 3 times. NOTE: When at full lock, hold the wheel there for about 3 seconds before turning in the other direction. (this will force fluid to flow through the pressure relief valve in the pump.) DO NOT hold at full lock for longer than 5 seconds - system damage can occur.

Then shut the engine off and wait for the foam to settle, (about 1/2 hour)then repeat. It may take 4 or 5 times to get all the air out so it doesn't make any more noise. Also note that normal driving of the car does nothing to get the air out. The fluid must be forced through the pressure relief valve to have enough pressure/flow to release the air trapped in the rack and pinion unit.

SOURCE: whining noise when the engine

Hi is your mini fitted with power steering if so this sounds like the steering rack if this is the case then you may also find that your hydraulic fluid is dissipating from the reservoir. Or it could be the drive Bering on the steering pump. Either way there is no quick fix or cheap way out as a new rack would cost around £500 with a new drive Bering around £150. If however it is not fitted with power steering then sorry I don’t know. Hope this helps

SOURCE: steering wheel hard to turn on my 1989 toyota camry

power steering belt broken or fell off, or the pump is out of oil. The pump is down on the right hand side (passenger) between the fire wall and the engine. You should be able to see if the belt is still on. Check the resevoir for oil. It is on the same side. It's a little plastic pot with a dipstick. Let me know how you make out.

SOURCE: steering difficult(slow) and a whining noise when turning wheel

The whine is most likely your power steering pump. Check the fluid in the pump. If you are low on power steering fluid you may have a leaking hose or fitting or the seals in the pump may have began leaaking. If you continue to run the auto without power steering fluid you will burn up the power steering pump very quickly.

I have a 97 Toyota Avalon and it kind of shakes when I get to 35 or 40. I replaced a tire and it helped alot!! But still shakes some. Could it be a tire rod or strut? Or should I just change the other...

If you think the tyres are in reasonable condition get the wheels balanced. If the front tyre/wheels are out of balance you get shake in the steering wheel at certain speeds. Backs out of balance are usually felt through the seat.
I cant see a connection between the power steer fluid level and the gear shift.

My 1997 toyota avalon made a popping noise when i turned now i can hardly steer at all if i get over 20 mph the steering wheel shakes and i cant control the car

Sounds like you messed up your axle CV joint. Have it checked out asap because if it goes totally bad, the car will no longer be able to move.

If there is a leak in the power steering and makes this rattle sound, does that mean they need to replace the power steering pump? how do you fix a leak? for the 97 toyota avalon. The power steering...

If power steering pump is leaking your options are: replace w/new or rebuilt or have yours rebuilt.
They make stop leak for pwr steering units but it's a very temporary fix. In answer to "driving it" - it's at your own risk - if it locks up then there's possibility of an accident. I'd get it fixed and be done w/the worries. Have a reputable shop look at it and give you an estimate.

Noise in power steering when engine is cold

Power steering fluid may be low. Pump is probably worn, does it steer easy sitting still. If not make sure the pump is full.

Need to replace dashboard lamp on my 1997 Toyota

You need to pull the instrument cluster out of the dash. This is not a very hard job, but, you can damage the outer dash fascia as it comes off, past the steering wheel.

Move the steering wheel to its lowest position.
Remove the phillips screws that surround the instrument cluster fascia (under the top edge)
Pull the fascia off.
Remove the 4 screws that holds the instrument cluster to the dashboard
Remove the wiring connectors from the back of the cluster assembly, and pull it out. Replace the bulb, and reassemble. The wiring connectors cannot be mixed up, they are all unique.

Toyota steering too light

The only way I know of to bleed a power steering system is to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock (all the way to one side and then turn all the way to the other side) 3 or 4 times. that will bleed all the air out of the system. You might have had a leak for a longer than that you realized and by fixing the hose the power steering works VERY good and you are no long used to how easy it once worked.
