I own a 1999 Subaru Forester which developed a less than ideal HVAC performance. Everytime I turn on the heater or airconditioner, most of the air are exiting through the vents close to the windshield and side vents. The surge of air through the dashboard center vents or through the feet/floor vents are minimal to none. Keep in mind that the air flow selector of the control unit is positioned to have the air directed to the feet/floor and the air intake is NOT in recirculate mode. Can anyone please help me with this issue. Thank you very much.

THe blend door seems to be stuck. When you change settings from defrost to floor air or, vent, the blend door opens and closes directing the air to the place you want it to go to. I have had some success spraying a lubricating oil such as WD40 under the dash on the blend door. You need to get under the dash with a flashlight to locate it. It looks like a flap. Spray it with a couple of shots of the WD40. Go easy on the spraying as you may be inhaling the fumes. Keep the doors and windows open to minimize the fumes. Wait about 1/2 hour and try the A/C functions. (defrost, floor, vent air)

What kind of sound? If it squeals then the fan belt needs tightening or replacing.
If the sound is the engine increasing in speed when the compressor engages then that's normal.

take back to the dealer, hopefully the will find that the blend door cable is off or not adjusted properly

yes... you'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you can access the bolts holding the mirror on and disconnect the wiring harness as well..

Hello, defrost or wind shield directed air is the fail-safe default mode of your heater-A/C system when there is a problem. It could be as simple as a broken mode door cable or possibly an unplugged or broken vacuum actuator control line. This also could be a bad control head unit.
