I have tested the battery to verify it is charged and working. The battery in the keyless entry remote is working properly; however I push the lock, unlock and trunk release buttons and nothing happens? The driver passenger side door doesn't unlock or unlock even if I push the buttons on the door itself?
If the system is not working even when you press the buttons on the door, then the problem is not with the remote control. I would first check if all the fuses are ok, if they are, I would check the wiring on the door to make sure there are no wires broken of chaffed. Focus first on getting the system working with the door buttons and after that is ok, the move on to the keyless system in case it still does not work. Hope this helps.

you must remove the internal felt covering that is on the inside of the trunk. This does take some force, but don't be afraid to pull hard, you will most likely not break any of the attachments on the felt cover. On the right hand side of the truck there is a handle right next to the license plate, it will take some finagling to get this to disconnect. Again, brute force dexterity and a flashlight are your best bet.

SOURCE: VW Jetta keyless entry remote not working
newer remotes just pull apart, no screws
first detached the half with the pivoting key
just pull that half away from the other half
on the half without the key attach
it splits apart to expose the battery (usually a 2032 watch battery)
you may need a small flat head screw driver to help to split it apart
