I have a 2009 Ford Escape that intermittently will not start. I bought it used from the dealer for my daughter to drive to school which is a couple of miles from home. This is what happens. I put the key in the ignition. When I rotate the key, the dash lights and gages all turn on and light up. I continue to turn the key to the start position and nothing happens. No clicking noise, nothing. I tried moving the turning the wheel, moving the shift lever through the gears. No start. All of the other electrical accessories work, windows, lights, horn etc… The only way to start it is to use a battery jump starter. I took the Escape to a very reputable battery store, and they load checked the battery and said there was nothing wrong with the battery. The first time I took it to the dealer for this issue, they said the battery was checked and there was nothing wrong with it. They could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. Everything else checked out and it started every time they tried to start it. They had it three days. It is at the dealer now and the same thing is going on again. The next thing suggested by the dealer was to take the car back, if it happens again, call ford roadside assistance and have it towed to the dealer and let them try to start it.

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Sounds like connections or cables. They may appear to look good but if they are aftermarket terminal ends they get corrosion under the bolt down clamp that holds the wires in. If they are factory cables that are molded on to the ends of the wires the same thing can happen. The easiest and cheapest thing to try is to put aftermarket terminal ends on the cables. Make sure you wirebrush the ends of the cables after you strip them and tighten them evenly and securely. Also clean the battery side thoroughly. If this doesn't work check the starter relay. Its the first place the red cable bolts to after the battery. Check the connections and try putting a jumper wire between the battery positive cable and the small terminal marked with an "S". One of these solutions should take care of this.

The clicking is the Starter Solonoid not getting enough CCAs from the battery to start it.
While running - the alternator should be able to charge the system to 14.4V.

11 volts you are experiencing tells me your alternator is faulty.

Your dash and other items were turning off/on while driving because the voltage probably dipped below 8.4v.

Your vehicle runs off the alternator power once started. The battery is only there to get the engine spinning initially.

A backyard mechanic's way to test the alternator is to start the vehicle - then remove the positive wire on the battery (coming from the alternator).

** If the vehicle stays running - the battery is problematic - probably a dead cell - have it LOAD tested at a local parts shop for free.

** If the vehicle dies shortly after removing the + battery wire - the alternator is failing - and replacement is necessary.

This really is the sign of a dying battery - one that may not be getting any charge to replace it. I would disconnect the +ve lead and put battery on charge for at least 24hrs (with an intelligent charger). Then check Alternator for correct output when running. Also check for current drain when turned off. A high drain may indicate a blown diode in the alternator - the rectifier block is usually replacable without scrapping the whole unit.

it`s most likley a flat battery not sending enough amps to the starter motor if batery`s good the check starter motor but also check leads for any corrosion from the battery to the starter motor if all else fails i find a very big hammer helps :p lol
