SOURCE: Car not shifting into second gear

If the car is grinding when going into reverse, you need to have the clutch bled or repaired.

If it goes into reverse with out grinding, I am sorry to tell you your problem is internal to the gearbox. Bad or damaged Syncro

Good luck

SOURCE: transmission won't shift from low gear .

Check you transmission fluid if its thin theres your issue if not it could be your bands or your torque converter.

SOURCE: auto trans shifting VERY HARD, possible cause?

It could be several things but I will give you a few ideas anyways to try and avoid the costly Ford dealer mechanics. Check your transmission fluid to make sure that it is full and that is still good and red. You may also want to just go ahead and change your transmission fluid but when you do so remove your transmission pan. Inside your transmission pan is your automatic transmission fluid filter screen. Make sure to clean it thoroughly and put back on filling the transmission with new fluid. Cleaning the screen is probably the most likely thing that will help. You also might want to consider using a transmission fluid additive that will help it shift easier. I've had pretty good luck with Lucas's products. Hope this helps. Be sure to let me know how it goes and if you need more help clarifying. Goodluck.

SOURCE: hard to shift into first gear

Tighten clutch cable until the car would start to move when the clutch peddle is 50% depressed, Before you do that, with the clutch fully depressed and in 2nd gear, start the car and slowly let off the clutch. You may find that the clutch has to be released virtually all the way before the car moves. It should be at about that 50% I spoke about

How long have you owned it? Is it possible there is a shift kit installed for towing? Was there something that was done just before it started doing this? A tune up perhaps?

How to use the 4x4

well, if you are sitting still it is recommended you put vehicle in neutral and select 4x4 indicator to desired posistion..... 4 high...4 low...or 2high (auto) when you select 4 low the top speed is not to exceed 25 mph. It is a very low gear for crawling or pulling. At any time you need 4 low gear you must stop trk, shift to neutral and select 4 low. The same procedure is done to change from 4 low to 4 hi or 2 hi. if not done this way internal trans, transfer case or driveline failure will occure. At any time you may shift 4x4 selector from (auto) or 2 hi to 4 hi, and 4 hi to 2 hi or( auto).****** But note, do not make shifts while tires are spinning or under power (acceleration)******* While driving you can make shifts at any speed between 2 hi (auto) and 4 hi and back to 2 hi. release throttle a little and select. you do not have to take foot off throttle all the way! just enough that truck is not under a power, load acceleration. If tires are spinning or you are on the gas and you select gears from 2 & 4 high the posibilities of severe damage can result. Also note that 4x4 is not recommended on dry pavement. When 4x4 is being used also take care as to the handling and the steering characteristics change, On tight turns the front wheels will bind and possibly **** a little. If you have never had a 4x4 before, obey what i have told you untill you get the experiance and you will be fine. HAPPY TRAILS.... AND A LITTLE 4X4 FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 98 s10 pick up with a 4 speed auto it drives fine in drive but if i ever stick it in second gear to start out it slips but if i stick it in first fine shift into second fine and so forth what...

On the 4L60E transmission, when you put it in manual 2, It will take off in 2nd and never shift, Not 1st. So it will be slow to accelerate. This is helpful when stuck in snow or mud. It keeps you from spinning the tires and gives you more traction.

I have a 99 ford taurus and sometimes it shifts hard or it won't shift gears right. it will go all the way up to 4 without shifting into gear

There could be several things causing this. Check the wiring harness plug-ins to the transmission. Make sure that all connections are tight. This could also be caused by a faulty or bad throttle position sensor which takes a diagnostic computer to check. If these two things are not the problem then it could be internal transmission problems.

I have a 1995 gmc jimmy 4x4 vortec engine and can not get it to 3

If it's a manual transmission, it's the bushings under the gear shift that a beat out of it. If it's an automatic, check you fluid level and filter. It may not be able to build enough pressure in the tranny if the filter is clogged or isn't enough fluid.
