How to troubleshoot bad EGR circuit on 1988 Ford Ranger Injected

I've had this little manual 5 spd four banger for about six months. It has an intermittent problem from running fine to just cutting out and losing 1/2 power then the next minute it is running fine. Ichanged plugs wires, cap and rotor, fluids, had a new exhaust put on piping from the cat back. Exhaust man says the cat is ok. Had codes read, possible ignition module or EGR. Ireplaced the module. Still acting up. Is the EGR a common problem that would cause these symptoms?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks at all lines and going to the MAP sensor? It also has a TPS(throttle position sensor) and CPS(crankshaft position sensor),I think.
I'm thinking vacuum leak or TPS. don-ohio

SOURCE: 1995 Ford Bronco 172 EGO not switching lean bank1- jerks when run

Have u checked for vacuum leaks or poss leaking EGR valve? use carb spray around the upper intake manifold where it bolts to the lower manifold, spray vacuum lines where they are connected to the engine vacuum ports, the idle speed will change if u hit a leak, as far as the EGR valve goes see if it gets hot at idle, if it does it is leaking, if all checks ok replace the O2 sensor, but i suspect u will find a leak at the upper intake plenum.

SOURCE: have 2005 ford freestyle. i towed to my shop,

Measure the exhaust back pressure. Do you have an old O2 sensor? If so just break the ends off of it so that just the tube is left sticking thru the center. Install it in one of the O2 ports and hook a vacuum/pressure guage to it. Should read les than 1 psi at idle and no more than 3 to 4 psi at WOT.

SOURCE: lack of power

These engines are pretty sensitive to the spark plug gap. Try replacing the plugs and making sure the gap is correct (even if they're pre-gapped. They're typically 0.055", but there should be a sticker under the hood that states the actual gap.

SOURCE: 1988 Ford Ranger Fuel Injected

Check the compression? You replaced all the items to make it run. remove the air filter and check? If compression is below 90 then bad rings or valves. Check the fuel pressure. to see if you have bad rings with low compresion spray oil in cylinders, if pressure goes up it's the rings. If nto it's the valves.Try these and let me know.

1987 Ford Ranger Check Engine light won't turn on

Since you have an '87, you most likely don't have one if you have never seen it on. Pull the instrument cover panel, then the three hex screws that hold the idiot light panel on the instrument cluster. The 1987 had a check engine graphics gel, but the instrument cluster did not have the check engine function on the printed circuit board. There is no such light included on that year model, I am not sure what month between the 1987 and 1988 model years introduced it.

1988 ford ranger push button four wheel drive an it wont engage all the wires are good it just clicks when u push the button.. what should i look for to make the four wheel drive work again it wont...

Start out with buying yourself a $25 book from the Parts House. The I would go to the front HUBS, secure & safety vehicle before you do anything, Clean, Inspect, Lune & Repair front Hubs as required, get the brakes while you're there. Check your drive line, axles, u-joints etc. Clean , repair , replace as needed. Check for Tranfer case Operation. Is there power going to the front Axle when 4WD is engaged? do you feel a change when you engage the Transfer Case? Have you checked the Power on the circuits? Have you Manual or Auto-locking Front Hubs? Answer all those Questions & read before you do anything.
