I have a 2000 ford ranger and all of a sudden with no warning I began having problems. All at once my speed odometer stopped working and it did not want to go out of first gear. I lowered it into second and picked up my speed and popped it back into drive. Then the O/D light began flashing and further down the road the transmission jerked pretty hard a couple times until I got it back home and parked. What is going on, could someone please give me a little insight as what I am dealing with concerning what has to be done for repair??????
The best thing would be to have transmission control module - ( computer ) checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . The flashing O/D light is trying to tell you that . The transmission is in limp home mode . A sensor or shift solenoid is most likely the problem . Your transmission is electronically controlled , has sensors , shift solenoids , an a computer that controls it all , plus electrical signals (inputs) from the engine computer .

Set your idle speed to mfg recomindation if that doesnt help check the dash pot that is what keeps the engine from stalling at sudden speed reduction

I had the same problem on a toyota truck after I had it lifted that is, the shif linkage was not properly adjusted. If I held the shifter down it would not jump outta gear, but hit a bump or stomp on the gas and it would

sounds like it's the motor is going bad or has a bad connection, try cleaning the connector if there isn't any gunk in the connector, check the manual see if there is a ohmn test you can run on the motor, if not i'd replace the motor.

Has fuel filter & spark plugs been changed lately, if not good inexpensive place to start. Does it happen more when you try to give it gas hard, or even when accelerating slowly? Worse in wet weather or no?
