Began to run very rough 7 days ago. I put it in nuetral and revved it up and it ran fine. My wife ran errands for 2 hours and it ran fine. That night it started running rough, after setting for 20 minutes it was ok. Later it quit running totally and would not start. The next morning it started and ran very rough(would not even pull car) but has not started for 6 days. Replaced fuel filter and pump. Then 2 days ago, I could not hear fuel pump anymore unless I jump terrminals. Replaced fuel pump relay. Still cannot hear fuel pump with key but it works good when I jump terminals(diconnected fuel line and let it run int a can to be sure.). Car doesn't seem to be getting any spark or fuel in engine. I have also tried a used fuel pump relay on strut tower. The codes all come up 1-1-1 so the diagn ostic is no help. I dont have much money so I can't just keep buying $50 relays. Can you help me?

well first the fuel pump relay is bad, that is easily replaced. next you have no spark. the first thing you do is take the cap off the distributerand crank the engine. if it spins that tell syou thyat at least the tang or gear on the shaft of the distributor is ok and not broken. next thing is remove the #1 plug and use a 1/4 drive extension 6" long and turn the crank by hand until the #1 cylinder is top dead center(put the extension in the hole of head where the plug was and you should feel the top of the piston also make sure you can feel the top of the piston with half the extension this way you don't drop it in the cylinder with the piston at TDC(top dead center) the rotor of the distributor should be pointed at the #1 firing position. IF it does not that means your timing is off and you need to retime it by taking off timing cover and either replacing the belt/chain or gears. now if you do not have a distributor and you have a coil pack there could be only 2 things that won't give spark. either a bad coil or your altenater is bad(the battery is responsible for starting not running the vehicle like alot of people assume. the altenator energizes the coil which inturngives spark. hope this helps you please rate this thanks

might look at the spark plug wires and plugs make sure none of the wires are burned or cracked destributer cap could also be a culprit or the rotor or the coil .

At night, with the lights off and standing in some dark area, open the hood and look for fireworks.
I chased a similar problem, also degrading over days in a lousy Saturn the same year as your car, that was a miserable piece of junk only months after buying it new.
That particular problem, only one of dozens occurring before it self-destructed at 57,000 miles (dropped a rod bearing cap), was 'only' the spark plug wires that were leaking like crazy, arcing to every piece of metal possible.
The car was 3 years old at the time.
I STILL hate that car and GM! They deserve bad luck . . .

If your air mass meter tests good, the I would tell you to check the HIGH PRESSURE PUMP underneath the Driver's side chassis pump holder-next to the fuel filter.
There are 2 pumps on your Volvo---the in-tank low pressure, and the chassis mounted high pressure. The car will run with the in-tank failed and the high pressure good. It will not run with the high pressure failed. Test the pump by applying voltage to the two terminals.
Another common failure, should the high pressure pump be good, is the HALL EFFECT SENSOR located in the distributor on the back of the engine. Once this sensor goes, it's no start. A rebuilt or used distributor may be the answer to your problem.

if you can buy a different car do it. this volvo is old and it might start to have weird electrical problems that may be hard and expensive to fix. Has it been running ok now?
