Check Utube for lifter tap, valve tap, and rod bearing noise. If you pull each spark plug one at a time, plugging it back in after each one, the tapping will go away if it's a rod bearing. At any rate, on your next oil change add some valve-medic or similar additive for valve noise. Make sure you follow direction or you will get massive lifter tap if you pour it into a cold engine.

2001 Lincoln Town Car Sig. .. loud knocking noise and the noise speeds up when reved or driven? what do you think is the problem? I had an oil change using 10/40 but the noise is still the same? can it be...

A loud knocking noise like you've described if it's in the lower end of the engine, is usually a Crankshaft Rod Bearing. If the knocking noise is in the top end of the engine, it is usually a lifter or a rocker arm. Either one doesn't sound good and can be expensive. You can continue driving until it stops completely or you can do as the autozone suggested and use an oil thickner such as STP although none of them work very long or quiet them down for long.

1999 suburban lifer noise

if you have a stethascope or even a wood dowel i would check the lifters. if you have higher miles this sounds like a hydraulic lifter pumping up. if you change to a heavier oil it will go away or reduce. thats the cheap fix.

I scanned my suburban an it says misfire cylynder 7. i jus had new heads an all put on a month ago. had a valve barely tapping..... over a week got a lil louder... this morning i was driving an the light...

Call him up, it sounds like that head is going to have to come off again. You definitely have a serious problem at # 7. Maybe a valve keeper that wasn't all the way in or possibly a bad lifter. Either way, don't drive it until it's fixed, it'll just make it worse.

I have a 1990 F250 with the 460BB motor. "Only

SOMETIMES IT IS CAUSED BY THE OIL USED! THE WAY YOU DESCRIBE IT SOUNDS NATURAL, BUT YOU MIGHT CHECK THE TAPPET ADJUSTMENT! ONE OR TWO MIGHT BE A FRACTION LOOSE! THIS IS EASY TO DO, BUT REQUIRES YOU TO REMOVE THE VALVE COVERS AND WIGGLE THE TAPPETS BY HAND! TOO MUCH FREE PLAY CAN CAUSE THEM TO MAKE NOISE! YOU CAN ADJUST THEM UP A LITTLE, BUT DON'T OVER TIGHTEN THEM, OR YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR LIFTERS! CHECK YOUR LAST OIL CHANGE, AND IF NEEDED, YOU MIGHT CHANGE TO A HIGH MILEAGE SYNTHETIC OIL LIKE MOBILE ONE, IN A 10W-30! 10W-40 IS TOO THIN FOR THAT TYPE OF ENGINE!

yes hydrailic and no will not affect engine. Engine problem is just more noticed when transmission not engaged.
Squealing is probably pilot bearing--not a big deal.
Tapping--maybe lifters pumping up
Engine light--get car scanned and report trouble codes back to us.
Autozone and Advance, among other parts stores, offer free scans.

Got a 2001 chevrolet cavalier 2.2L with apx 150k miles and began noticing a light tapping noise coming from the head noise speeds up when the kar revs up noise is not real loud and is coming from head not...

I had a 96' Cavalier with a 2.2l, noisy lifters. Kept oil change and wound up doing a head gasket at 303k, I think they are just noisy. I do know that the timing chain tensioner is not a lubricated part and it is just like a nylon type material. You might check to see if the noise is coming from behind the timing cover. I had to replace that tensioner twice over the lifetime.

Lifter

It could be lifters but its more likely that your not getting oil to the top right away. Probably plugged oil passages in the cylinder head. Remove the valve covers and clean it out. Change your oil and see if it helps. The damage may alreay be done though

64 Chevy pickup, rebuild engine, tapping noise in

Remove the valve cover and rotate the engine and check to see if all the valves are opening the same amount. If not, you have either a bad lifter, bent pushrod, or cam going flat. Check your valve lash with the valves closed. You should be at 0 lash at all of the rocker arms.
