The first thing you do is run an OBD2 engine control module fault code test, this engine is fully electronically controlled. You will need a code reader to do this test, rent one or borrow one from a local auto parts store like Autozone or O'reilly. The test connector under the dash in front of the driver. See picture below.

Sounds like a possible fuel pump problem...When they begin to go bad they will overheat and lock up, then work fine for a while and do the same thing again. By changing the filter you lowered the flow resistance and allowed the pump to work a bit easier but still being bad, it did the same thing again. There are other things that can do this as well, but pump is most common.

Check for a plugged fuel filter. If that is OK, then it is probably a bad fuel pump. Once it cools down. then it starts to work again.

Hi! I strongly suggest that you have a PCM (powertrain control module) reset. The PCM has connectivity on all electrical current that runs inside the car including the engine, transmission, accessories, etc. It's like a car's brain that when it's faulty everything else fails. If the PCM can't be resetted specially when it's heavily damaged. I suggest that you have it replaced to get rid of all the troubles. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!
