I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS A TIMING CHAIN. IT SHOULD BE CHANGED AT OR ABOUT 100,000 MILE. BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE CHANGED THEN, JUST INSPECTED.

SOURCE: I have a 1994 jeep
i have run across alot of new alternators especially rebuilt ones that are faulty . b 4 replacing the steering pump I would pull the alt and have it checked. if you did away with the a/c compressor completely then that eliminates the a/c comp. clutch. The power steering being bad the noise should change when you turn sharply.
