The engine of the '96 Ford Explorer 4.0L will crank, but will not start. The Charging System Light came on while driving the Thursday and the vehicle wouldn't start that night after being shut off. Vehicle has good gas, all other fluids, Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch is not tripped and is in the proper reset position.
I just had this same problem on my 96 Explorer XLT. Very random when it would do it, sometimes everyday for a week or nothing for 6 months. What I found was that when this happened, when I turned the key to the on position without starting the vehicle. That the check engine light should come on and if it doesn't, that means the the computer isn't powering up. What I had to do was leave the key in the on position and pop the hood, and on the passenger side of the engine compartment, there is a power distribution block, in there is a relay for the EEC Power Relay. Now with the key on I wiggled this relay and you can hear systems under the hood kick in. Relays turning on, etc nothing actually starting to scare you though. But this lets you know that the computer is alive and running. You should now be able to turn the key to the start position and the vehicle should no crank over, but now fire and run. It took me quite a while to figure this out because it was so intermittent. In the end, I replaced the relay for the EEC Power and everything has been fine since. When the new relay was in there I could not replicate this fault as I could with the bad relay. Hope this helps you.

Try the eec relay under the hood. matter of fact. if your truck is 15 years old or older and all the relays are still stock. change them all! this could fix your check engine light and your abs brake light.
Is the fuel pump coming on, it should run for 2 seconds when you turn the key to starting? then it will turn off by it's self this is a safety. Do you have spark at the spake plugs? Do you have injector pulse? I would need to know these things before I could help you.
The fuel pump does not come on. I have spark. How do i know if i have injector pulse?
Best way to check for injector pulse is to buy a Noid light for auto zone or advance that fits you vehicle, it will flash when you crank the engine. They usually don't cost much if your buy just the one you need.
But my first thought is to check for power coming from the ignition switch when the key is in the start position and in the on position. Ford has a problem with their switches.

i have a 1996 explorer and i parked it one hour ago now i cant start it. i dont hear th fuel pump could that be whats wrong with it?
Reoccurring problem: car shuts off while driving. Usually it re-starts. One specific instance, it did not and I was stuck in an intersection. I took it into be repaired and, of course, the mechanic could not duplicate the gripe after test driving it. In the past, there have been several instances where the car would not start--similar to the other problems already posted. I, too, could not hear the fuel control relay turn on (whine) after turning the key on during those instances. When it does whine, I know that the car will start, and 99% of the time it does. Also in the past, a mechanic replaced a sensor which fixed the problem for a while, but perhaps it was just a fluke. I will try replacing the computer relay next.
I changed plugs, wires, fuel pumps fine, fuel reset, and starter fluid, also added gas
JUST LIKE IT HAD A MASTER KILL SWITCH! SHOW PER. SCAN LOW VOLT CODE,CK BATT/CHARGING SYSTEM ALL GOOD!
