Stalling I have a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 Vortec 4.3L, etc. I had to replace the fuel pump a while back (changed filter also, etc), drove fine for a week and then went out again. Replaced the fuel pump once again and drove fine for a week or so and then it would it suddenly started stalling after driving for a few minutes. I had to let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and then it would start finally, but once again only allowed me to drive a few minutes and the it would repeat. Problem started about 50 miles from home so it took me about 4 or 5 stalls, wait, start, go, stalls, etc before i made it home. How did you finally correct your problem?

Possibly faulty ignition module is the problem, stalls when engine is hot when you sit for a while it cools off and runs again until it heats up again, those are usually the symptoms of a bad ignition module and after a while it may give out all together and not run at all, usually if the module is at fault it shuts down the fuel pump so the engine don't load up with fuel, do to when engine continuously cranks over the injectors never stop squirting fuel and flood the engine do to lack of spark which is produced by the module, this could possibly be your problem.

check fuel filter remove and shake it and dump out contents on clean sidewalk to see debris thats been going threw it. other test would be fuel pressure . and common fails are fuel pump or crank sensor, try going to your local auto parts store like O reilly they usually have the best code scanners and it's free

What should the fuel pressure read on a 1998 gmc z71 5.7 vortec

sounds like your fuel pump, should be 50-55psi fuel pressure, if you don't have a gage, you could check the schrader valve on the rail with screw driver, watch out if it's pressurized it could squirt in your eye's if it shoot's out really strong, chances are it's working, but if it just does little squirt or dribble, then check it out electrically, fuse, relay etc:before you drop the tank, or like some people do take box bolts out and lift box back and it's easier to change pump then.good luck and any other questions feel free to ask me

I would lean towards the fuel pump, but... How dirty was the old filter??? if it was bad then the new one may have picked up whatever was left in the line. I guess I would go the easy route, replace the fuel filter, this time with the filter off crank the truck and catch the fuel in a mason jar til it is clean, you may need to drain the tank and try to clean it out if it is real dirty. Hope this helped Tim
