1990 Toyota 4runner wont go into 5th or reverse

It runs great just bought it but now it wont shift into reverse or 5th gear. It shifts into these gears reallyt easy but the effect of 5th or reverse doesnt occur I shift into reverse and it goes into 4th I shift into 5th and it shifts into 3rd ...really wierd thanx for the help !!!!!!!!

They had a problem with this plastic washer that is in the shifter tower it sits just under the shifter it self and gets worn out and causes this to happen- hope that helps.

Hopefully you got a warranty with the clutch job, so I would take it back to that shop first. If you have someone else work on the truck the first shop is off the hook for responsibility. Its possible the clutch has failed, or you have developed a new problem.

pressure and clutch plate (clutch set) need to be inspected and probably replaced. be prepared for a transmission repair as well if the problem has been going on for months.

Grinding
Usually reverse does not have synchroniser , so it's normal if the first gear is going in ok.
If you have problem to shift into first gear , then it might be a problem with clutch or clutch hydraulics.

Runs great. however, when shifting into 5th gear.
try tranny oil change then put step up grade oil toyota recommend 75w/90 try 80w/90 + add lucas gear oil 80/90,guaranty will work.

Truck wont move in gear [manual trans] why?
push the clutch pedal all the way and see if the slave cylinder pushrod is going out at least an inch, if not replace the slave cylinder, if it does goes out, sad to say but you have problem somewhere else inside your clutch assembly
