98 jeep grand cherokee 5.2 hard to start

The first start and after the car sits for an hour,it takes along time to start and when it does it runs roughly for a few seconds. I found if I turn the key on and let it on, without starting the engine for about 10 seconds, it will start up right away. After it's running it runs good!

Something is going on with the fuel system bleeding down.
there's a small leak somewhere..take it to a shop and have them look at it. Could be in a number of areas but with hands on they'll be able to help you out.

Sounds like fuel flooding the carburettor.
I would check the air filter is not dirty as this can cause more fuel to get sucked into the carburettor and use a lot of fuel, once you stop the car it has excess fuel in the carburettor then after sitting for a little the excess fuel evaporates.
I would start here as cheap fix just an air filter then look at the fuel filter and spark plugs.
Hope this helps.
Regards Craig

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L is very difficult to start if it has not been run in the previous 6 hours. Replaced ignition coil but didn't solve the problem. After sitting overnight it

Low fuel pressure.
You need to check the fuel pressure on the first crank and watch it as it is running.
Requires a special gauge.
If it were just a starting problem I would say it could be a pump relay, but not if it runs rough for 5 min.
Might be a dirty filter or problem in the tank.

I have a 97 jeep grand Cherokee, when it has sat for over an hour it takes 8-10 seconds of the starter running before it starts. If turned off after running, and started within a few minutes no problem,...

Fuel pump. The valve in the pump that stops the fuel from draining back into the tank is not working so you crank and crank until the fuel gets up front. Turn the key on but not to start for 5 seconds then off do it five times and then try to start it should start right up

My 1999 jeep will stop running while driving it

Hi, i have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, 4.0 litre, had the same problem, quits running out of the blue, driving down the road, or sitting idling. starts right back up or takes some cranking to get it running. found out that the crankshaft position sensor was going bad, cost 40$ for the part, but had to have mechinac replace it due to it's location, hard to get at. jeep runs great now.

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. 5.2L. It sometimes wont shift from first gear to second gear. If and when it does it will keep shifting as it should until you shut it off. Then it may or may not do it...

I had a similar problem for months with my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L. Mine used to take a long time to shift and usually wouldn't shift until speeds got up to about 50mph or so for about a mile and a half then would work good afterwards until I shut it off and allow it to sit for a few hours then I would have a repeat of the same problem. I was about to replace a relay in the tranny when someone suggested that I replace the fluid and filter. I took it to Quick lube shop and had the filter and fluid replaced. Still running like a charm going on five months now.
