Toyota 4runner Dies at Stops.

When Driving my 4runner the vehicle dies after I take my foot off the gas., I recently had major work done on the heads and I know the knock sensor needs replaced. It seems as soon as I lift my foot off the gas the rpm's drop so low it wont stay running. What could this be?? Please help.

Sounds like the throttle sensor may need adjustment. Ya I seen this before where i stepped on the brakes and it wanted to die. Might be a forum post to show how to set and test

could be a vacuum leak from a bad brake booster of hoses not properly connected after the work

hi the pinging you here is ignition firing before it should but if you have a knocking noise i would suspect the worse but try doing a compression test first see if everything is in order then if this seems ok have you put fuel in it just before it started if so change your fuel if not see if the electrical system has a knock sensor if so run the engine and tap the block close to it see if engine revs drop if not replace but the knock is a piston best of luck yates210456

Hello

I just worked on this problem a couple of days ago. If the motor is a 3.0 liter. The idle control valve is located at the bottom of the throttlebody assembly right below the bore for the throttle butterflies..What usually causes this valve to go bad is the mechanical part of the sensor sticks as it becomes sludged or carboned up. Manufacturer claims that the valve cannot be cleaned and should only be replaced....It's a high dollar repair to replace this sensor as your engine coolant flows through this electrical valve. The valve idles the car fast when cold, as the antifreeze gets hot the valve drops the idle down.....I have successfully cleaned several of these valves and cured the dying problems...
First remove the air filter top cover and the tubes that connect to the throttlebody. In the right throttlebody you will see a port right before the butterfly. Under the throttlebody you have a black plastic sensor with a 2 wire terminal. Remove the 2 phillps screws and pull off the electrical part of the valve. you will feel a magnetic pull while removing. Remove slowly and catch the black sealing oring, and there will be a metal washer also.. The shaft that is exposed is the mechanical control of the valve. Rotate the shaft and it should feel sticky if bad..Using a throttlebody spray cleaner spray into the small square port of the right bore, rotate shaft and spray until stickfree.....Reassemble

Ifs possible.
If the sensor is failing the check engine light should be on.
A problem with the fuel pressure would not always make the check engine light come on.

Its a 115000 btu multi fuel.it starts up,runs a few seconds,then shuts off.it doesnt smoke or anything wierd,it just shuts off.

It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related issues,---------------

1999 toyota 4runner, 140K miles: for 2 weeks, have problem starting when cold in morning. takes 3-4 clicks and foot on gas pedal to start. now also problem starting when warm after driving for 30mins....

Sounds like a sticky throttle if you can't keep idle. It won't hurt to try.... you can try a quick cheap trick by spraying a little carbon remover (buy at any auto store i.e. autozone, oreiley's) inside the throttle, open the valve, spray just small amount, close it back up and rev it a few times and repeat. It removes the carbon film after long use. fixed my idle issue in my cars. If its really bad you might have to clean it thoroughly but i highly doubt you have to do that.

It sounds like your EGR valve is either clogged or has malfunctioned. It could also be your IAC (Idle Air Control Valve).

Fuel not flowing as it should. 86 Corolla

Check the fuel pump pressure using a fuel pump pressure guage. It would not necessarily be unheard of to have a new, but bad, fuel pump. No or low pressure, then take the pump back and get another one.

4Runner dies while driving

how did you check the alt on our off the vech if you had checked off the vech thats ok but did you check it while it was on the vech also check for battery voltage at the main post off the alt make sure it shows battery voltage if not will not work . also load test the battery.
