No brake lights, fuses keep blowing and wont shift out of park

My 96 corolla would not shift from park I used manual override to get home. When I got home I realized the brake lights and tail lights were not working. I checked fuse panel the stop fuse and tail light fuses were both blown out. I changed fuses and the stop fuse blew out when stepping on brake, the tail light fuse blew as soon as I turned on lights. Next step was the stop light switch located under the front dash hooked to the brake. Changed this switch put new fuses and they blew out again. What else should I check or change? Please I need help!!!!!!!

Thank you,
Jeff

I have the same problem I have already investigated for a short and we keep going through fuses. What could this be. We are about to move to the east Coast and I hate to not have this fixed before hand.

Car still driveable. I was told to replace the main fuse with the clear long cover located under the bonnet. Is there a video demonstrating how to replace this fuse.

I just fixed my daughters car with the same problems. I found some ***** had ininstalled the tail/brake light bulb incorrectly, (that had to be hard) and the two contacts over time had started to make contact blowing the tail and stop light fuses.

I would look for a wiring short in the trunk at the taillamp area, or, inspect the sockets for the taillamp bulbs for corrosion. In any case, you have a short circuit in the trunk area, also check the wire that comes from the body & goes up the trunk hinge on the driver side; that wire may be chafed, and it may be shorting out. Hope this helps; please get back to me if you need any further assistance.

Fuse number 32 keeps blowing , no brake lights and the gearshift wont come out of park

unplug the brake switch from the brake pedal arm and see if it still blows. If not, trace the circuit back to the brake lights.

Use emergency shift interlock release procedure in owner manual.

I think it is to turn key to OFF position, then shift car to neutral. Turn key to ON and starrt car. Shift into drive & go.

My 1999 lexus rx300 is stuck in park.i have to use to shift override to get it to shift, any suggestions?

There is a brake switch located underneath the drivers side on the back of the brake pedal if this is failing you will not be able to shift from park without the shift override.

Can't shift gear

check the fuse for your brake lights, check your brake light switch. If the brake lights don't go on your car will not shift out of park. The shifter should have an override button. look for an access hole (cover) near the shifter, pop the cover off and push a pencil down there to shift. check your owners manual for specific information on the use of the override button
