Catalytic converter has plugged up twice in 3000 miles

Had a bad coil pack, engine misfiring. catalytic converter plugged up. Replaced exhaust system and bad coil ( 1 of 2). Now about 3000 miles later, car running poorly and told cat converter plugged again and needs replaced. My Son said check engine light was on but no codes show up. Haven't noticed any misfire or reason for cat to fail. Replaced Exhaust system again and second coil just to be safe, runs fine. Any ideas why catalytic converter would plug again?

Catalytic convertor fails due to oil burning, recent head gasket, improper fuel control, but plugging up at 3000 mile misfire surely plug it up when the vehicle is dumping gas in the catalytic, lean misfire ,running very rich due to a coolant temperature.Who is putting this on?I dont know what state you are from,a catalytic should not be installed unless the vehicle is in proper fuel control.and whoever installed this should foot the bill. You need to claim warranty regardless and plus there is a EO# that must match the vehicle.

start by replacing the plugs and plug wires, this is esp true if car has over 100,000 miles on it. damp air can make the problem worse.

SOURCE: My car would not start, was cranking but not

Running extremely lean. Did you replace the 02 sensors? They detect lean and rich conditions and if the previous problem was too rich, the 02 sensors may have set ecu to run lean because of their problem. Now converters are free flowing and the settings should have again adjusted itself if the 02 sensors haven't flaked out. Overheating is and a fire hazard.destrucive to a converter and as hot as you say they are getting is not good. Do this, in the intake ducting is a sensor call a maf sensor. It's in a metal section. See how dirty it is. Then buy a spray can of CRCelectrical cleaner and spray wash the sensor thoroughly. Do not touch, rub, or brush the sensors, Just rinse dirt away with spray. The sensor is delicate, sensitive and very expensive to replace. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR! The spray will dry quickly. Good Luck and make sure you have a clean air filter. Let me know if you will please.Ned

If you've gotten a tank of contaminated fuel, I'd check on the condition of the injectors first.

from the misfire raw fuel damaged the catalytic convert .
P0300 random misfire . Without testing we'd be guessing ! Fuel system testing , ignition system testing , engine management system testing , back pressure test the exhaust .plugged catalytic converter

Engine is way too rich. You will burn that car up. Unburned fuel is getting into the CAT and igniting. Check the injectors.

Code p0304 misfire e 320 mercdes 1997 when you start car vibrates and when you are at stop sign. solution please

A code P0304 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Faulty spark plug or wire Faulty coil (pack), Faulty oxygen sensor(s), Faulty fuel injector, Burned exhaust valve, Faulty catalytic converter(s), Running out of fuel, Poor compression, Defective computer.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs/wires). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if equipped). Otherwise, check the coil packs. Sometimes the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

I own a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4WD V6. About a month ago, I started getting my check engine light coming on from time to time. One day, when it was on, I stopped and had the code read. It returned code...

Hi kdeyette,
I hope our chat was informative. I am assuming, since you said your Jeep is equipped with a V-6 that it is a 4.7L. You can't swap plug wires because there are none, but you can swap coil packs from one cylinder to another to eliminate the coil pack as the cause of your misfire. As for the "solution" above that says to replace your catalytic converter, all I have to say is if you are not getting the "dreaded" code P0420 "Catalytic Converter Efficiency Below Threshold" - don't worry about the cat. - you MAY get this code once the misfire is fixed, but I wouldn't run out and lay down hundreds of dollars on a converter until the computer tells me it is time....and simply "resetting" codes doesn't fix ANYTHING!!! Just resetting codes and continuing to operate the vehicle with a misfire problem is a sure-fire way to guarantee that the catalyst will need to be replaced. Misfires destroy catalytic converters. Let's hope you get it fixed BEFORE this happens!
