My 2001 jeep grand cherokee wont shift out of first. neutral, reverse, park are ok. There is no slipping. I tried the on off sequence to get a code and all it says is done. This just started with no other indication of a problem. ****** fluid is fine. Suggestions of what it could be?

I don't understand what you mean this must be an automatic transmission what is first .
If so and the transmission fluid looks OK
First is drive dose the 4 wheel work
So you can't drive the vehicle in forward motion .
Neutral reverse and park at best can make go backwards .
The good news is it dosen't sound like the tranny is shot do you have other electrical problems or it also could be a linkage problem if cable or VACUUM operated .

SOURCE: 2001 jeep grand cherokee wont shift out of first

Check shift cable. Disconnect cable at tranny and move linkage by hand then reconnect cable and see if the cable moves the linkage the same amount.

2001 jeep grand cherokee 4 0 Ive lost park park is now reverse reverse is neutral neutral is drive How do i adjust the linkage

It is probably not an adjustment issue. You probably have something broken or loose between the shift lever and the transmission. Look for a bad cable or housing or brackets broken near shifter. If it is floor shifted, it is possible that it has something broken in the shifter.

Location neutral switch

ok steve.
what transmisison. ? r?
on the A/T there is on the side of all these, a shifter rod.
and on that end of rod is the PRNDL, "prindle" switch.
this switch tells the TCM what gear your in
and to glow the reverse lights.
and to prevent shifting out of park , if the brakes are not applied.
called park lock out.

use google image to see 10,000 photos of it.
or more.
here it is

or read the FSM.
page 8w31-5 and others, one for starter kill and on for reverse.
see index there. for neutral switch.
good luck.

1999 jeep grand cherokee drives forward in reverse and neutral

Jeep has always had a problem down the line with the shifter linkage usuallly under the shifter, you have to take apart the console or column and locate whats broken inside there. I've had this issue myself with Cherokees too .

To be honest with you Jeeps are notoriuse for their transmission problems. Most likely you have a shift solonoid in the transmission bad. I would have it checked before it gets worse to try and prevent internal problems.

Good Luck and I hope this helps you.

2001 jeep grand cherokee wont reverse in

This could be an issue with the shift solenoid , but can also be caused by low fluid due to a leak, check your fluid. Is there a check engine light on, if there is it could be a solenoid issue.
