It is in the hole (held in place by a Y shaped clamp) where the speedo cable used to go on the side of the trans, has 2 wires coming out of it, it is round with a round connector. Is this for an ABS problem? if so the sensor is on the top of the differential housing.

Can I take a 3.0L automatic transmission from a 2001 Ford ranger and put it in my 1998 Ford ranger 4.0L ... So I guess what I'm asking is are they compatible with each other

2wd or 4wd,
current trans is.4R44E OR 5R44E OR 5R55E.
THOSE 3 TRANNY NAMES ARE JUST BASE LINE NAMES NOT FULL.
why not ask ford this?
lots to go wrong,
A/T boxes are complex. and vast sub-versions exist even 4wd
it has to fit engine end and be same length to tail prop shaft.
must have same gear ratio's
and wire wiring to the connector (TCM/PCM) to the boxes control solenoids. speed sensors and pressure sensors etc.
also even 1 year box will have 2 or more upgrades on box sensors and are not the same. (wrong one used, PCM fails)
The PCM must like this wrong tranny, and most do not. guessing.

the answer is:

  • ask ford this, or join a real ford forum that does complex swaps
  • ask any tranny REBUILD shop to look it up.
  • ask any wrecking yard to look up what other cars match they have this very expensive data base, network to do all that. ask.

Speed sensor on a 1992 ford ranger. Where is it located.

The speed sensors are usually on the rear of the tranny, you should have 2 sitting back there, one is the speedometer, and the other is the speed sensor. Now, I am not 100% positive of your truck, but take a peek and see what you got. Hope it helps.

Over drive light blinking after about 5 miles of driving.

abs (ABS)sensor is the anti-brake skid sensor and has nothing too do with the transmission
you are referring to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) run the fault codes as the TR sensor and the TCM are most likely the faulty sensors
