Clogged converter i have a 1990 toyota camry, it is overheated very fast, its catalytic converter is clogged and i drilled a few holes in it to let some of that stuff out to let it generate right, but it is not wanting to stay crankedand when the engine gets to a certain temperature, the sound of the engine changes and if you hit the gas all it does is shake and you hear a pinging sound in the engine and when you cut it off it wont crank again until it cools all the way back down. how do i fix it?

Replace the cat converter for a start
pinging ( detonation) is from incorrect air /fuel mixture or ignition timing
run the fault doses to see what sensors are not correct

It seems you have a timing problem. Have the engine timed properly. If that does not work it could be a craked rotor or distributor cap. have all these checked.

SOURCE: Problem with the clutch switch for '90 300zx

check your starter key switch on the steering column.
the contact for the starter is wired to the key selector.
you need the Factory Service Manual fot trace out the wire. In general, the starter wire is red, the current runs from the battery to the key switch then to starter motor.

If you have wired from stater to the battery directly, you are bypassing the key switch.
The clutch switch is mounted on the top side of the transmission near the converter housing. again, you need to located the FSM in order to figure out exactly where it is.

SOURCE: engine surging , won't accelerate over 3000 rpm ! IS chocking is like is not enogh gas

Do you have a check engine light with this?
What can happen is a code has caused the engine to protect itself. For example in a low coolant situation when the engine heats up too much, the engine can Knock causing an Engine Knock fault.
If that occurs you will recieve a fault for each of these items. Fill the engine with coolant. Then reseting the code will let your engine accelerate normally.

SOURCE: Overheated car , fixed huge leak from water pump , shaking now

Hi the car would only need to overheat once to blow the head gasket,, it depends on how hot the engine got and how long you carried on driving it, you can boil the oil crack the cylinder head ect,,, check the oil for water mixing with it (common sign of head gasket failure) the oil goes like a milky colour,, but if you have already checked this then still dont rule the head gasket out,,, it can leak the other way water out of the cylinder head,,, check for any signs of dripping water around the cylinder head, white smoke from exhaust pipe ect,,
But the best way to rule it out would be to get a compression test done this wont cost much and give you a definate answer,, If it is the headgasket it aint expensive to buy the parts its the labour that cost as it aint a small job,,, if you have the manual give it a go yourself and remember you can post on here if you get stuck along the way,,
Hope this helps some

If you indeed are getting no spark on any plugs, check your plug wire that runs from the rotor to your ignition coil- the one that doesn't go to the engine. Make sure the internal connections didn't pull out and get crushed back in or fall out. Try one of your other plug wires on it and see if it fires- won't run good but you will see difference and be done troubleshooting. Other than that, you bought the rotor button and and rotor as a set right? Make sure the button metal tip is contacting the cap. If you got the wrong one, it may sit too low for the contacts even if it is long enuff. If you were getting spark, I would just say you got the firing order wrong.

Where should I place a hole in the clogged catalytic converter on my 1999 Dodge Neon onto clean it out?

Most cat converter products I know of are poured into the fuel tank. The car is then driven until empty. These preps won't fix a dead converter, but can boost one that is just dirty inside.

Do you have a different sort?

All this all fails, cheaper generic converters are available from Autozone and similar places

1990 Toyota Camry severe oil leak I can't tell where it is coming from ? What type oil and filter do I use ? The car died on me and wouldn't start had a lil bit of blk smoke coming out how do I fix it? And...

This car has issues. Where in the country do you live? What's the vehicle mileage? Most likely you'd use 5w30 but this can change based on climate and mileage.
As for the exhaust problem, need to know where it's split. These cars will go through exhaust systems, and a car of this vintage may need a catalytic converter/ front pipe converter or worse yet a pre-cat which these older cars had. Black smoke could indicate partially clogged cats or other fuel issues.
Time to get the car in for service or look for a new vehicle. The necessary repairs may not be warranted unless the car is in pristine low mileage condition.

it sounds like to me your catalytic converter is clogged up,midas or meineke or someone like that will test it for free, they will simply drill a small hole in the exhaust pipe in front of and in back of the converter and compare the pressure in these two locations to see if the converter is clogged, sorry to tell you but converter replacements usually start at around 350 $, hope this helps you out

How to make catalytic converter breathe

NO you can not drill holes before the Catalytic Converter to give it air. Drilling a hole will set the service engine soon light on and you'll sound like a tank coming down the street. And why do you want to give the catalytic some air anyway's ??? Good luck and keep me posted.
