A couple of days ago my brake lights on my 2004 Chevy Aveo wouldn't work, so I attempted to remove the lamp covers to check the bulbs. Also, before this my shifter would get stuck in park and could only be released by pressing the unlock gadget next to the shifter. Back to the brakes...Well, you open the trunk and remove the two screws just like the manual said, but it was very hard to pull off. There's 2 prongs holding the other half of the light on. The lamp will come loose by prying it (very hard). You think the cover will break, but it'll come loose. The bulbs were all OK.

After much frustration and internet info, the STOP LAMP SWITCH, GM#96436331 ($9.30 at Chevy dealer), which is located under the dash and has contact with the brake pedal, was defective. Once replaced, both my brake lights AND SHIFTING problems were cured. So if the brake lights suddenly don't work or you have problems getting the vehicle out of park, check the switch by pushing the prong (end that has contact with brake) of the switch in and out. If it doesn't retract smoothly...that's the PROBLEM. Good Luck.

Most likely, this is caused by a defective multifunction switch. This is the switch that operates the turn signals, and is mounted on the steering column. It is not hard to replace, but be careful, get a service manual, follow the directions closely, as this car most likely has an air bag in the steering wheel. Any tampering around in the wrong area, and you may be looking to replace the air bag as well as the multifunction switch. Follow all precautions given by the manufacturer when changing this item, and life will be good.

2004 Trailblazer lower taillights not working upper work fine.

Tony, our TB's only have 3 bulbs, 1 brake, 1 running, 1 backup.
If you happened to be playing with NEW LED bulbs (from local retail location) for the brakes, guaranteed you blew the fuse under the rear seat. It takes a special CK socket for the brakes that no one carry's. If you're only dealing with normal incondecent bulbs, I'd still check the fuse under the rear passenger seat.

These have a brake light switch that controls both the shift lock solenoid and the brake lamps, so chances are that if it is not a fuse then it is the brake light switch.
