The water in my radiator ('95 Montero) has not been circulating. It is not the thermostat, for I have tested that already. After I warmed up the engine, one side of the radiator was hot, & o

I drained the fluid out of radiator, opened up the bleed screw on top the engine, then refilled it, hoping that I would have dispersed any air in the system. I also ran the motor with the heat on full blast, to make sure that after warming up, there was enough fluid in the radiator & motor. That is when I found out that 1/2 the radiator was hot, & 1/2 was cold??

Not too helpful, I really want an answer that is not bottom line. I want an answer that possibly could save me money.

It def sounds like a flow problem with the radiator, you can try flush it out but need to put quite a bit of pressure into it so unless you have the correct gear to do it, it will be costly to take it into a shop, was there any dirt or **** in the water? has the engine been overheated at any point? The radiators can be reemed out but again its costly and most garages wont put a warrenty on them as its taking thickness out of them

I flushed the radiator with clean water while the engine was running and the heater was on high. The car never overheated. Then .added prestone radiator cleaner & drove it for 3 hours intermittently as directed. The water in the side bottle seems to be dirty, as it was clean when I first changed the fluid out . Now when the radiator gets hot, the WHOLE RADIATOR GETS HOT. Today I will be flushing all the drty water out (twice) then will refill with clean Antfreeze. Let you know if the blockage is cleared. Hey, must I solve my own problems here?

RevHeadPete goes straight to the bottom line here. I could have gone to a radiator shop and would have gotten THAT ANSWER!
DamienSmith, having the correct knowledge is more helpful than having the correct gear here. The correct gear was a water hose, a rag, & having a good ole' wet time. The correct knowledge is what was needed to accomplish the task.

Sounds like you radiator is blocked and ******** ,you need to replace it

  • Shirley K-Pace Apr 09, 2012

I sure hope not, this is a Mitsubishi & that would probably be costly. Isn't there a way that the radiator can be super flushed, reamed out, or something?

  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2012

well you could remove the thermostat and boil some water ,the drop the thermostat into the boiing water to see if it opens,it might be faulty

SOURCE: Coolant filling up overflow bottle

You may need to ask AAA to put a radiator pressure tester on the resevoir bottle and pump it up to operating pressure(Pressure cap rating) and see if it over pressurises while it is running at operating temp, rev engine up and down and watch what the testers pressure readings do,it should move up and down in sync with the water pump.If the pressure keeps building i would have to believe that combustion chamber gases are over pressurising your cooling system. Also test the pressure cap is functioning within factory specs.

SOURCE: Heater not dispersing hot air

i got the part yesterday to fix this problem on my 03 galant es. its called the Heater Control Actuator Motor set me back 150 but was worth having heat. took me and my dad maybe an hr and a half to put it on and put the dash back together. can easily be done at home. it is not necessiary ro take the entire blower housing out you can access the part from the passenger side, after removing the bottom dash. it is located maybe 6inches about the heater core.

Check the gauge cluster- I am having the same problem with ours-- check the actual temperature-verify thermal/laser thermostat or use a liquid thermometer-- mine is not running hot, water pump, circuit boards, temp sending unit, or fan clutch or thermostat

It does not circulate until the engine is warm. At that point the thermostat(cooling valve) opens allowing the coolant , from the radiator ,to circulate into the engine. Before that point only the coolant already in the engine circulates, inside the engine alone. .

Have 1999 Montero 4M4T 2800 in Costa Rica. How many rows are required in radiator? 3 new head gaskets, re-built motor TWICE, new hose BEHIND motor or radiator, new cap, NOW mechanic says he WON'T put in...

have cooling system pressure tested for external and internal-combustion gas leak that is interfering with the normal engine water circulation. You may have a warped cylinder head. remove and replace thermostat only when it is defective but replace with a new one.

What could cause heat needle to be high even after fan has kicked in

Poor circulation of coolant, partially blocked radiator (check for cold/cooler spots in radiator core, this would indicate a blockage of the warm water) malfunctioning thermostat (when cold undo top radiator hose to see if water is circulating.) if it passes these tests then there is likely a major mechanical problem ie: head gasket etc

Cant tell if water pump is circulating fluid

have the car run for at least 10mn with out the radiator cap after the thermostat opens up you should see the coolant circulating have some one give it gas and look to see if is doing so(careful not to look directly on the radiator) if you see movement the pump is fine if not it could be that the thermostat isn't opening or a bad pump.
ps make sure the fluid is toped before you start.

My 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited AC will not work while car is stopped but when driving works fine. What could this be?

not blowing air of or not cooling ??
if the second then most of the cars made for Europe are equipped with a( thermostat ) but don`t confuse it with air conditioner thermostat or thing is working like valve that stops water circulating in cold starts so the water will only circulate around the engine block not through the radiator and of coarse it helps heat up your car`s engine faster but the problem comes when that valve got old (by the way most of those valves working as a wax capsule when the water heats to some amount the wax molten so it opens the way for water to circulate through the radiator ) what happens is simply the wax looses some of its function and molten in higher temp . so it block the water again until it heats up to molt the wax my advice : get off that part and just don`t replace it if you found it pricey for you your car still working but will needs more time to warm up i hope i was useful for u sir .

Overheating... already replaced radiator and thermostat

When the radiator was replaced, I would assume that the cap has been replaced as well. Radiator caps that have worn out release steam from the system which means lesser water being circulated. Check if your coolant/water decreases. It may be a leak from the hoses or the engine itself. The leak from the engine may be a bad water pump or the water pump may be bad and water is not circulated correctly. Check the also the fan if it is running once the engine has warmed up. Check the fuses for the fan and its relay. Swapping relays with the AC fan to test is one way of testing if it is the relay or the fan that could be bad.

Over heating

Thermostats in cars are often neglected, if not totally forgotten, units. Yet they play an important role in the general performance of cars by restricting water flow until the engine has warmed-up. Thermostats are heat sensitive valves that open and close. On cars they prevent circulation of coolant to the radiator until the engine is warm enough. When the thermostat is closed water only flows through the water pump and water jacket to let the engine warm quickly. When the thermostat opens, water can then pass through the radiator for general cooling.
google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad); Having a car that warms quickly is particularly useful in cold weather when you want to use your car heater as soon as possible. The thermostat is in a small housing positioned where the top radiator hose connects to the engine. The best time to check or change a thermostat is when you are servicing your radiator because you need to drain the cooling system
first. Hence, a thermostat change is a good time to flush and clean your cooling system, check all radiator hoses and the radiator pressure cap. Be sure you have the correct cap on your radiator and it is not rusted. Thermostats are small, inexpensive items. You can test them by heating in water and checking their operating temperature with a thermometer. However it really is quicker and ultimately more reliable to simply fit a new one,
1. thermostat common problems (replace every 50-60k miles)
2. thermostat switch sensor (which turn your cooling fan on and off)
3. check and see if the cooling fans is running when the engine get to its operation temperature. (fan motor can be fault)

Over heating, engine only, just had radiator replaced

Thermostat, is where top radiator hose connects / it could be that it is air locked /also could be water pump after removing the thermostat you should be able to see if water pump is circulating. if it was a used radiator ? it could be just as bad as the one you just changed / Have it flow tested .gallons Pier. minutes. also mack sure no kinks in hose./ let us know .Thank You.

Running hot all water going straight to overflow tank

Check the thermostat. If the upper hose does not feel very hot to the touch when the car is warmed up already, this indicates the thermostat is not opening, and therefore the water cannot circulate causing the overheating problem. Second possiblity is the radiator fan. If the car tends to overheat only on city driving it is a the radiator fan not coming on. This is either due to a bad radiator fan, blown fuse, bad relay, or a bad temperature sensor or temperature switch. If the car tends to overheat at highway speed, then it is the radiator being clogged up, and not letting enough water circulation when demand is at its highest which is high engine rpm.

dear friend:i think we should start with pressure testing the system for water leaks,if there is leaks you will loose pressure,if you reach working temp feel the top and bottom radiator hose, they should be the same temp,if not then the thermostat is faulty,if you got poor circulation then it can be the waterpump or the radiator is blocked, check airflow threw the radiator, check radiatorcap pressure,
