Engine Died on Reverse Gear

When I shift from the Drive gear to Reverse, my engine stopped completely. Then I shift to Park to start my car, the engine made was loud and just kept getting louder and louder until I shifted to Drive. The noise has happend quite a few times lately where I shifted from Drive to Park. Do you know what's happening to my car? I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute DX V6.

    the car will drive in d for like 100 meters and the transmission will stop working but will drive ok in reverse and in second and in low

    The speedometer quit working too. It moves up and back when I start the car but it will not show me how fast I am going, will not move when driving. This happened at the same time. Won't go over thirty, won't change gear while driving and speedometer won't work. It is an automatic. I can hear the engine get louder when I give it more gas but it will not go faster.

Try adding some transmition fluid to the transmition . or have it towed to a repair shop

Just to give an update on my car - I've been having an issue with the car stalling when moving from Park into Reverse or Drive (I have automatic). ... I have been playing with the idle advance trying to get more ... I put in the remainder of the AT fluid I had on hand and the car never died on shifting after that.

Car in park turn key starter engages engine starts and you can hear the Bendix still spinning in the ring gear put car into drive and then they stop spending
Does the starter engage again when you go back to park ?
Shifting from park to drive would cut the circuit from the key switch to the starter. The neutral safety switch prevents you from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.
I would say the key switch is not turning off power to the starter when you go from start to run.

What causes 1996 Dodge Neon SOHC automatic transmission to delay or slip shifts?
that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
very good.!
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.

solve overheat first.

slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
SLIPS.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.

on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.

why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)

YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH OR THE COMPLETE GEAR SHIFT
ASSEMBLY.MOST LIKELY THE SHIFT ASSEMBLY.YOU MAY BE ABLE TO GET IT OUT OF PARK BY STRIKING DOWN ON THE SHIFT KNOB AND PULLING TOWARD REVERSE AT THE SAME TIME WITH THE IGNITION TURNED ON.IF THIS WORKS,PULL BACK TO NEUTRAL AND START ENGINE.THEN YOU CAN DRIVE IT TO REPAIR FACILITY INSTEAD OF PAYING A TOW BILL.IF THIS WORKS CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT NOW.IT WON'T CONTINUE.

Car will not shift into gear
Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.
