My 2002 Explorer has always been in overdrive since I bought it, recently the light started flashing that it is out and I have no idea why? I need to find out how to get it back in overdrive? It is an automatic and now when I need to excelerate quickly it revs up and has a delay.
This could mean there is a problem with the transmission, but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?
2002 ford explorer xlt 4.0 liter auto 4x4 O/D light flashing fixed on mine. Turned out to be a 32.00 vehicle speed sensor located on top of rear differential.

I have the exact same problen with the exact same year make and model. Has Sally Fredsa solved her problem yet?
I have the same problem on my 2002 Explorer. My overdrive light has been on the past 2 days, and it doesn't want to switch to 2nd gear. This morning my check engine light came on and is now staying on. I got a diagnostic test done today, and the options it could be is low fluid, poor electrical connection, failed pressure control solenoid and last a blocked passage. My question is, to narrow the problem down, is how do you check the trannie fluid when there is no dipstick and where can I begin to look for the electrical connection. My o/d is at the end of the gearshift lever. Any help would be appreciated, since I was told the codes are very accurate but gives you a few things that could be the problem and you have to go through the process of elimination. If I can rule at least 2 of these out or if one of these will fix it, then less money for the repair, the better.
I have the same exact problem as cbm3, exactlythe same. Hope we can figure it out soon. I have a road trip planed in a week.
