I have a 2008 2500 chevy express 4.8l and it says ''service deterrent'' on the dash and it want let me start the van until i reset it. how do i reset it?
I had the same message come up on my 2011 Chevy 1500. The issue was we were using a key without the security chip in it to try to start the van. It was just a key to unlock the doors. When you use the wrong key initially in the ignition, it locks out the proper(Ignition)key as well. You have to wait about 20 mins before it resets & then use the proper key(ignition key) with the chip & you should be good to go. If you need an additional ignition key(With Chip) you have to get it from the Chevy dealer. It cost around $30.00.... Good luck. By the way, I couldn't tell the difference between the two keys by looking at them, they look the same. I took the keys to Home Depot & they were able to tell me which key had the security chip in it, but they can not make a copy, you have to go through the dealer.
Disconnect your battery for a few minutes. This should reset the engine computer and let you get going again.
