Power steering comes on & off when ever it feels like
Depending on the year but this is a electric power steering type and depending on the system ,now if it has a motor and oil resevoir at the back by the fire wall then it could just be a low on oil or dirty electrical connection even a bad earth ,but if its the newer type with a motor under the dash then its big problems as its a new unit about a grand plus as opel will not reprogramme them only fit a new one although a auto factor might know somewhere that will repair and reprogramme it for you cost about a monkey ,Well you know a dealer profit on the part plus labour they will not even try to reset it i mean you have to pay for the gelled haired salesman in the sales and of the course the secretaries in mini skirts in the office not forgotteing the gaffers fancy bit on the side plus her flat rent and her car ,then the kids in private school and so on

Likely you are talking about the harmonic balancer.
The bolt turns counter clockwise and is generally removed using an air gun. There is another way to do that too but it is a bit dangerous. Using a solid breaker bar (one without jointed end) you can brace the end against the ground with the socket installed on the crank bolt (I actually have a pipe driven into the ground outside just for doing this...I just slide the bar into the pipe and keep it form dropping by using a vise grip on the handle). Once the socket is on the bolt, crank the engine over using the starter, the engine will force the bolt to back out.
After you get the belt installed, tighten it as much as you can by hand and ask a shop to just give it a final tightening with an air gun.
If the socket slips the bar can fly up so be very careful and don't stand where it can hit you!

you could have a bent suspension arm or a tracking problem i would recomend you get these things checked first
if thats all fine i would go to your local brakers yard and get an electric power steering pump and fit it yourself
they are located on the steering column at the top and can be seen if you pull off the trim panel on the right
they are only held in by a couple of bolts

Make sure its the correct bulbs. Then you have to back probe the circuit to determine where the short is. If its not the correct bulbs issue, then I recommend you test the brake switch on the brake pedal before going any further with this diagnosis.
