Error Code P0441

CEL light continues to come on when gas tank drops to under a half tank and goes off when it is above a half tank. Replaced a bad gas cap with a generic cap - not one from the dealer. An error code of P0441 pops up with recommended fixes of a charcoal cannister or a fuel pump module seal. All valves, hoses, seals, vaccum lines are fine. The only real fix is a charcoal filter which is not really needed or required for me to have in Georgia. What is the general price of the canister and could it be found in a auto salvage place? My understanding is that it has to be a toyota part. Thanks.

A relatively rare trouble code for Toyotas.. The most common cause here is a vacuum leak in the system that prevents fuel vapor from reaching the charcoal canister, where it is then sent to the engine via the opening of the PCV valve. To determine a leak test, you would need to visit a mechanic. But something you could do yourself is verify the fuel cap and filler neck are both clean and fit tightly together. Make sure there is no dirt, and the O-ring is not damaged/dirty/missing as this could allow fuel vapor to leak, thus triggering the sensor.

My personal guess here though would be a bad valve. In my line of work, I deal with faulty valves all the time. A valve consists of various moving parts and the ones that are solenoid operated, such as yours, can develop electrical faults over time. You can check the solenoid portion of the valve yourself using a multimeter set to Ohms and placing the two leads across the connector, one on each prong. Remove the power connector from the valve first of course. A typical solenoid will give a value something like 3 Ohms. (A solenoid is a coil of wire wrapped around a core which is usually attached to the device the coil is operating. When a current is applied, the coil forms an electromagnet that either pulls or pushes the core to cause valve operation. Your fuel injectors work in this way).
Should you see a reading less than 3 ohms, approaching zero, you have a short. If you see a very high reading or an "0L" or no reading at all, or "infinite", you have an open circuit. In both cases, the solenoid has failed and needs to be replaced.

Your canister could also be clogged, and despite Georgia's laws regarding the canister, it is a part of the purge system that needs to be present, and in good condition to allow proper operation.

I have included a link to a helpful information page which may further assist you.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: gas leaken new tank

Don't laugh but I've used baby powder to find leaks on gas tanks. Spread it on the tank with a cloth or powder pad drive around a while then take a peek. If you find that the tank is leaking bring it back to the place who installed it . This is no joke.

SOURCE: Had OBD2 codes P0441 & P0446 on my 1999 Toyota

According to my 2002 Toyota Tundra manual (and it may be different for your car) P0125 is as follows:
Insufficient Coolant Temperature
for Closed Loop Fuel Control

This would seem unrelated to your original problem.

Yea VSC lite will come on when ever a check engine lite is On, the codes you mentioned are certainly a EVAP codes, make sure your gas cap is a factory and inspect seal surface and contac surface on filler neck for rust clean if any, also check all hoses going into air box reconect if necesary, (have your car been in any accident) if have access to a scan tool resest lite if lite comes back no other option take it to a dealer, check for warranty coverage on this systems.
good luck

SOURCE: check engine light . shows

Your best bet is a repair shop with an EVAP
Smoke Machine,to quickly check for leaks.

You won't see or feel anything without smoke
in the system.

2004 CHRYSLER CONCORDE LXI P0441

Did you have the codes erased after the repair ?
The evap system has several parts that could cause the code.
The system applies pressure to the fuel tank every few minutes and checks for leaks. If any are detected, or if the system will not hold pressure, the light comes on. A common problem is a faulty gas cap but I don't know if that will set a code 441.

2001 Toyota Sienna CEL displayed code P1150 & P0420 what could be the problem

Mine is a 2001 Sienna LE. I got the P0420 code and the dealer want to replace an engine control computer for $1600. I've found posts that say you can replace your oxygen sensors, which still costs around $100 each. The P0420 seems to be emissions related. When my check engine light comes on, I run the highest grade, no ethanol gas, and usually within a couple of tanks, the light goes off again. The last time it happened about 2 wks ago, I put in the 93 octane no ethanol premium and a can of Seafoam and within a half a tank, the light went out. Your problem might be more serious, and I don't know what the 1150 code is, but so far that's worked for me.

Check engine light indicator is on...after total

Obviously you have something above the tank that's leaking. That will result in a code the same as a bad or loose gas cap. At this point, the only way you can find the source is to take a good look at everything, even if it means dropping the tank to do that. (better than wasting fuel or having a fire start under there).

Can you tell me for what reasons the 'check engine' light will com on?

Generally something mechanical is wrong with the engine. Could be minor or major.

2001 toyota 4runner< engine light on, code comes out to be - p0441 auto zone said change gas cap, i did, 2 weeks later light comes on again< what do you think?

You can get this code if you don't tighten the gas cap all the way, or the gas cap is bad. I will put all the detail for the code below and what I would do to fix the problem...

NOTE: Do not top off your tank either. This could cause the 'overfill check valve' to fail, and could cause this code.

Definition of P0441: Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect
Purge Flow

Detection logic:
DTCs P0441 and P0446 are recorded by the ECM when evaporative emissions leak from the emissions components
or when there is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for
pressure switching valve, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself.
detection cause: Pressure in charcoal canister and fuel tank does not drop or
drop in pressure increased beyond the specified limit during
purge control (2 trip detection logic)

What I would do:
1. Replace fuel cap and reset computer. If code returns, then proceed to next

The next steps require a diagram, so the purchase of service manual to locate the components is very helpful

2. Check for vacuum leaks in ALL emission hoses
3. Check VSV valve operation (there are three; they are ~$75 new from dealer, and sometimes fail)
4. Check for cracks or leaks around or in the charcoal canister (usually requires a smoke machine)
5. check for voltage to VSV's
6. Last resort: take it to the dealer and have them run a diagnosis. This should run between $50-$100.

Good luck!
