On your Jimmy you need to put it in 4 hi and up under the battery tray is the actuator for the front dif. make sure the vac hose going up to it has vacuum. if it doesn't then start tracking the hoses going down to the transfer case. one goes to the actuator, one to the vents on the transfer case and transmission and one goes back up to the vacuum canister, it's located on the hood on the drivers side. if the canister isn't getting vacuum then nothing is going to work. i just had to repair the hoses in the truck i put the trans in. the 4 wheel drive now works in it. i would have never know this, the hoses drop over by the exhaust and get hot and burnt and start cracking and breaking up and leaking. this can also cause some minor running problems. also. one last note. where the hoses attach on the transfer case. that connector has to go on correctly. it has a pin hole in it to line up on. if you put in on wrong things won't work.

SOURCE: four wheel won't engage

Theres a vacume dash pot under the battery box. It pulls a cable that engages the front diff. Put the vacume line and you'll have lights and four wheel drive. (it happened to my blazzer)

Check the switch on the transfercase remove the vacume lines if there is oil in them the switch has to be replaced and the lines should be cleaned out you should also check under the battery tray to make sure the boot is not ripped that controls the leaver to engage the front axel

SOURCE: Front wheels won't engage when in 4 wheel

Then the problem would be in the differential. something came loose or broke off the actuator on the inside

1998 gmc jimmy you here the 4x4 ingage but the front wheels want pull

Hello Bj.

This is a common issue with the Jimmy's in that year.
Because you can hear the shift motor it likely works.
The problem is likely at the front differential. There is a vacuum actuator that has a cable that pulls on a lever which engages a clutch inside the differential tube.

This vacuum originates at the engine, goes to the transfer case. On the transfer case the is a vacuum switch which then directs the vacuum to the vacuum motor when 4x4 is called for.
You will need to check for vacuum at this motor which is located on the right front engine compartment down low. Tricky to get to but not impossible. Follow the cable from the right side of the differential if you can't locate it.

If no vacuum, trace it back to the leak. If no leak, the vacuum switch on the transfer case may be bad.
If vacuum is there, which I suspect it is, replace the vacuum motor and cable assembly.
There you are, if you have further questions, please ask me here.

Thank you for using FixYa.

NO 4X4, TRANSFER CASE ENGAGES BUT FRONT DIFFERENTIAL NOT WORKING

There is a vacuum line that goes to the transfer case.if this line is ruptured it will not engage the 4wd.Next there is a switch on the t-case that may not be working. In 4wd it supllies vacuum to the 4wd actuator that is under the battery tray.next the applied vacuum pulls the cable engaging the frontaxle.

4WD does not engage.

Depending on which transfer case you have, there will either be an electronic actuator or a vacuum actuator that engages the front differential. On the backside of the transfercase there should be a round metal tag bolted to the case. It will have a number on it that starts with NP. Either an NP241, NP246, etc. This will tell you which case you have. Grab a repair manual at an autoparts shop, and it will show you the location of the actuator for the specific case you have. If you have a vacuum actuator, check the vacuum lines going to it first before replacing it. Twelve years does a number on rubber vac lines under a vehicle. You may just have a leak in one.

My four wheel drive doesnt work on 97 jimmy but clickes when i push the button?

there is a vacuum actuator under the battery it could be leaking vacuum. There is also an electric actuator on some models found in the same place. There is a cable that runs from the actuator to the front differential that locks it in. Make sure you have vacuum and the actuator is pulling the cable when 4x4 is engaged. hope this info helps.

When I push the 4 wheel drive buttion . The light flashes but will not go in 4 wheel drive

Check to see if the front diff is being engaged. Ther is a vac switch that come from the transfer case. It sits right on top has 3 lines. One line is vac input the other is vac output the third is a vent. When you push the 4wd button that switch allows the vac to the front diff. The front diff actuator is under the battery. Check to see if the actuator is moving if not check to see if the switch is any good by checking vac on the actutor line. You can doo this with out taking out the battery. You will see a line that goes from the back of the engine up the right side then under the batt. It is covered by wire loom. Cut in to it and see if there is vac. If not check to see the switch works. If there is then check to see if the actuator is torn( actuator looks like a cruse control actuator) or the cable to the front diff is stuck.

4 wheel drive went out in my 91 s-15 jimmy

several places to check first one is the vac line on the ball mounted to your hood. if its ok then under the truck on the transfercase is the vac switch disconnect it and check for vac.. if you have it put vac line to actuator its uner the right innerfender it controls the front diff lock.. if its functioning then you just ned to replace the vac swithc in the transfercase its just screwed in.. the lines to the 4x4 system are plastic and rubber mostly..
