92 integra randomly won't start, won't even turn over

It often does this following a long drive. the lights come on, but when i turn the key i get nothing no crank or response from the starter. it is a 5-speed, so i can roll start it , and often the problem goes away after that, and i can drive just fine, and it will start just fine, until the next time i go for a long drive. this problem can go away for weeks and months at a time, then just randomly returns. i have replaced the following ; clutch, starter, distributor, ignitor, plugs, wires, battery, still the problem comes back. all volt readings are solid when the problem occurs, the fuel pump works fine. i am totally stumped on this problem and no one i ask has a clue what it could be!! if you have any ideas i would love to hear them

i also have a 92 acura manual shift which starting doing the same thing recently.now i know some mechanics, but see when i purchased the car i had no problems. doing some investigating, i come across a relay under the dash by the passenger side the has some ahet been bypassed i went out to acura and gave them the numbers offf the relay and they cant tell me whats it for. so what i did was that i got another relay with the same numbers and wired it up how it suppose to be done and it doesnt do anything when i put just the two wires back they way someone bypassed it it cranks. i have changed the starter the timing belt the whole distibutor and ignition fuel pump and still the same cranks but no start, or at time not even a turn over. i didnt want to spend the 75.00 acura was trying to sell me the relay for eighter. so i dont know if i should just keep the head ache or just feed the car a gallon of gas and a match.lol if anyone can advise me on any could be i'll be more than happy to tey. thanks in advance

i have the same problem...my mechanic did two things that have thusfar fixed the problem...there was an alarm system still connected that was installed aroudn 92...apparently that was disrupting the ignition...so he reconnected that...also he change the relay as the other user mentioned....as he did these both at the same time, im not sure what actually fixed the problem, but its been a couple months now and i havent experienced the problem

Same issue, 1991 Integra RS. It used to be the Main Relay issue where you could crank all day and not get it to fire. The Main Relay fixed that. Now, it simply wont even turn over - yes, all lights are on, clutch in. Only on hot days after the interior of the car gets good and hot. Fresh battery, good connection, good ground off of the starter, fresh starter 6 mo ago. Im thinking either ECU swap, or first trying the clutch switch. Yes, it had an alarm, but that is disconnected.

I had the same problem in my 92 Integra. I bought a new relay from the dealership for like $60.00. What happens is if the car gets too hot, like on a long drive it will lock out the starter. This fixed the problem for me. Let me know if you need the part number and i will dig it out, i still have my old relay.

I have a 91 Acura Integra (5spd) which had the same exact problem. After replacing the battery and starter, I thought I solved the problem for good. But the next hot day, it happened again! Having used up all four service calls per year in my roadside assistance plan, I knew I had to dig deep one last time. Well, on that hot day, I noticed that my cooling fans were running, without a key in the ignition, and the engine off, doors locked, just like I left it. It turns out that on hot days, especially if the vehicle is sitting in the sun, it triggers the cooling fan to turn on thus draining your battery either dead or just below cranking level. The problem is either the cooling fan relay has a short in it, defeating the purpose of the relay, or the cooling fan electrical connector has a short in it. So regardless if the engine, or more importantly, the vehicle is off, the cooling fans will turn on, without you knowing while your at work or at a restaurant, because the temperature sensor has been triggered, and if there's a short in that circuitry, the fans will turn on and it doesn't take much time, for it to drain your battery without the alternator on. So you either have to repair / replace the cooling fan relay or connector. Hope this helps... Good luck!

If it only does it when it's hot it's quite likely the fuel relay. Happened to mine too, just like you describe. no problem when it's cold, but after a long drive or a hot day with the windows up.... Easy to do yourself, you need to remove the panel under the steering wheel and the new relay just pops right back in

  • benmcd May 29, 2011

My 92 integra had the fuel relay issue. On warm or hot days it may start then immediately cut off.Never a problem in the cold. Replaced fuel relay under the drivers side dash, panel .
    Problem solved
But I still have a problem with the cooling fan coming on ,even when the car hasn't been used in a few days. Runs battery down. It must be a short in the relay... I haven't figured this one out yet.

might be a timing issue. check if your spark plug wires are seated correctly also you might have a dirty fuel injectors. a good cleaning might help as long as they are not leaking.

My 98 acura integra 1.8 liter non vtec will not start but is turning over fine. i know the spark plugs are not firing so i changed the ignition coil and that did not work.. what would make it do that it...

Your vehicle may be part of a recall from Hinda/Acura. This recall involves most models, years 1998-2002. Defective part is Ignition Switch. Typical symptoms include: Random Long/Hard starts, stalls while driving (when this happens speedo drops to "0" while car is in motion), No spark, some warning lights are not lit (when key is set to "ON")..typically happens more often in hotter or humid weather. Call your local dealer with your VIN# on hand, and refer to a 2002 Honda/Acura recall regarding Ignition Switch Failure.

I lost the key to my 92 acura integra..i need to go to work tomorrow and i cant start the car with no key?? anyn ideas on how to get it started with no key?

Well you can start it without the key, but it wouldnt do you any good, because the steering wheel, will be locked, and you wont be able to turn. But if you want to start it...all you have to do is jump the starter, but i really wouldnt recommend it....

I got a 92 acura integra it won't start I check the timing belt an the car is on time. I replace the main relay and it still won't start. it seems that I'm not getting any sparks in the fuel and I replace...

the check engine light means there is a permenant code, what you need to do is get a scanner and check it. also could be a crank position sensor. But I would get the check engine light checked first. And the car will most likely have to go to a shop.

92 Integra won't start

Many cars these days are equipped with an immobilizer. (you can find more information about the immobilizer in your owner's manual). The immobilizer allows the engine to run only if the correct key is used. If your car has an immobilizer, you probable see a "Security" or Key-shaped light coming on on the dashboard every time you turn the ignition ON. If this light is flashing when you turn the ignition ON, it could mean that there is some problem with an immobilizer or the system does not recognize the key. If the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, the engine wold not start at all, or would start and then die in few seconds.
You can try a spare key, if it won't work, your dealer is the place to call. Sometimes, the key is just need to be reprogrammed. On some cars you can find the information how to reprogram the key in the owner's manual.
