Fuel gauge goes to full when filled up then after a few miles starts dropping to zero and jumping back and fourth peroicically. Shop says the fuel sensor is bad and that it is a $650 part. Is this the only solution?

you will need to replace the fuel level sensor.(sending unit) it is in the tank and is hooked to the fuel pump. you can buy seperatly from pump. you may finf it easier to remove the bed if you have some help. it is six or eight bolts and harness unplugs then you can get right to it.

I believe chevrolet has a recall on this problem having to do with wiring repair at the tank.

The float is sticking in the fuel tank.Could be expensive if the float is part of the fuel pump.

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
