CAUTION If the radiator is filled to the top with coolant and the engine is run without the radiator cap in place, the coolant will expand and spill over as the engine warms up.

  • Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
  • Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
  • Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
  • Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
  • The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.
  • When replacing a thermostat, be sure that the thermostat fits into the groove in the block or outlet housing. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the engine will overheat.
  • Install the gasket.
  • Reinstall the thermostat housing. Refill the system and run the engine or pressure test to check for leaks.
  • When the engine has reached operating temperature make sure the thermostat opens.
  • You should be able to see coolant circulating within the radiator.
  • Another way of checking thermostat operation is to feel the top of the radiator hose or use a thermometer or multimeter with a temperature probe to confirm that the coolant is warming up.
  • If the engine is overheating, but the top hose is still cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed and must be replaced.


When replacing the thermostat, also replace the gasket that seals the thermostat in place and is positioned between the water outlet casting and the engine block.
Generally, these gaskets are made of a composition fiber material and are die-cut to match the thermostat opening and mounting bolt configuration of the water outlet. Thermostat gaskets generally come with or without an adhesive backing. The adhesive backing of gaskets holds the thermostat securely centered in the mounting flange, leaving your both hands free to align and bolt the thermostat securely in place.
  • Remove the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If any gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably be a coolant leak after reassembly.
  • Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
  • Install the gasket.

Just did this today on my 2000 4 cyl. It was a pain.

First off drain the radiator. There is a piece that sticks out at the bottom on the radiator on the drivers side. Put a large container under it and unscrew the white-ish plastic bolt to release the fluid. Make sure the radiator cap is opened to let it drain quicker. Then remove the top hose. The thermostat housing is at the end of the radiator hose on the engine. There is a bolt on the upper right, right up against the belt shroud for the camshaft. There is one more under the housing to the left. You pretty much have to feel for it. There is not much space to work with so I removed the fan (4 bolts) wiggle it off. To remove the fan you also have to remove the shroud to get it off. No problem just two bolts. This should give you plenty of room to work with. Then remove the housing and exchange parts. Replace the gasket (its a small rubber o ring. Mine looked fine so I left it, but I did put a bead of silicon around it just in case. Reverse the steps and add fluid back to the system.

What would cause a 1994 Ford Ranger to heat to the L of 'NORMAL' on the gauge after a new thermostat was installed? It has never been past the r/m consistently.


if it is a genuine ford ranger thermostat it should be the same, however if it is an after market one (non genuine ) that may be the problem as thermostats have different "start to open" & "fully open" temperatures......hope this helps......cheers.

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger @WD. The therostat is stuck open and needs to be replaced. I have been told by a Ford shop mechanic taht we willhave to replace the whole housing at a cost of $250+? Does that...


No its not. Drain the system a bit, remove the housing, remove the thermostat, put in the new one, replace the gasket, put the housing back, top up the system.

How do I get the Thremostat housing off my 1992 ford Ranger XLT 2.3


To change that thermostat you need to follow the top radiator hose to the motor from the radiator. It will lead to the thermostat housing on the block. The housing will be anchored with (2) bolts to the block (I think). Take the housing off and the thermostat is housed inside.you will have to replace it with a manufactured suggested thermo(probably 180* or 200 degree thermo).

Overheating


You can remove the thermostat, but this is not the best thing in the world for your engine. Your thermostat lets your engine reach operating temperature quickly for best oiling. Over cooling is almost as bad as over heating and since your thermostat is relatively cheap (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_THERMOSTAT-PERFORMANCE-Mr--Gasket_17360031-P_N6003E_P%7CGRP2061A____) 9.99 at advance, you should just go ahead and change it out. Replace thermostat in 2000 ford ranger


the open pipe that you took the hose off of is the thermostat housing, you will need to remove this to reveal the thermostat, make sure you use a new gasket with sealant when reinstalling thermostat housing to prevent leaks and dont over tighten the bolts,run both bolts down as far as you can before final tightning
