97 mitsu eclipse emission test problem

I have a 97 mitsubishi eclipse gs-t with about 100k on it. I'm trying to get it to pass the VA state emission test and it consistently returns codes of "system not ready" for the O2 and other parts of the emission system. I have heard from mulitple dealers and other mechanics that I simply need to drive the car. I have been driving it for about 2.5 weeks and put on about 200 miles and still get the "system not ready" messages when doing the test. Anything else I can do myself or simply go to the dealer to have them look at it?

SOURCE: have a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor.

Hi,

You could try checking/replacing the Universal Joints (U-joint) and their attendant parts. Additionally, you may want to check the drivetrain from the transmission end to the differential. Incidentally, there were a couple of TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) specifically addressing issues with the drivetrain.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Will a 01 eclipse wire harness work for a 03

Possibly, it all depends on the ECU and engine sensors. The only way is to get a workshop manual and check all the connections. Mitsu often change sensors and connectors between years.

Pass smog test

change your oil and oil filter. Add a bottle of octane boost to the fuel tank then top off with fuel. Drive vehicle for about twenty minutes then have emissions tested. Unless you have a bad catalytic converter, you should pass emissions.

I need to know how to change the timing belt on my 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS

The best thing to do is go down to your local automotive store and buy a repair manual for your car. It will take you through the process better then what can be explained here and it has pictures to help you as well. I have a 97 GS and the book has been invaluable.

Timing chain

If you can fix the Caddy I'm sure you can handle the Mitsu. Go to www.alldatadiy.com and buy a subscription for the Mitsu. All the info you need will be right in there. Or I can scan and email the timing chain replacement procedures to you.
