The fact that the coolant temp sensor was replaced the next step i would take is monitoring fuel pressure.
Try to source a in line fuel pressure gauge fit it to the pump connection that supply the engine then from cold start up drive till it reaches operating temp and be sure to watch if pressure drops as the engine gets to the point were it dies. If pressure drops that will mean the fuel pump is the problem as it is over heating therefore unable to supply so while you allow the engine to cool the pump also cools and then will work again.
As for crank position sensor its main job is getting the engine running so if it was the issue the car would not start at all hot or cold
You might have problems with the coils
check the temp of the coils when it stops working
if faulty they heat up alot

SOURCE: Code P0118 on Audi A4 - Related to Ignition Coil Problem?
Hi, the sensor on the engine (right at the rear end of the cylinder head) has two separate outputs. One drives the temperature gauge and the other provides data for the engine control unit. The output for the engine control unit is almost certainly faulty and the sensor will need to be replaced. It isn't an expensive item and's not time consuming to replace (1/2 hr) - so you could ask Audi to do it for you when they replace the ignition coils.
Hope that helps Matt..
SOURCE: Hi, I have a late 2001 Audi Allroad quattro and
1- Temperature sensor is the first to be replaced. When it is bad, it generates erratic signals hence the warning is on.
2- Also the bad sensor connector can give this symptom.
3- The heater in the cabin doesn't blow warm air since their is not coolant flowing through the heater coil. this indicates there is a blockage.
4- Has the engine got a new coolant since original one. It needs a complete flush through the heater coil.
5- If you have an overheat then this is a serious problem due to the water jacket gets clogged up. Need a professional shop to fix.
6- If you don't have an overheat problem then just doing # 4 will take care of your problem. Good luck.

does the check engine light come on or flash when the running issue starts? sounds like you have an ignition coil dropping out intermittenly.
